Kritix Korner Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King Dave Matthews Band
July 21, 2009 —This latest album by DMB, as the Dave Matthews Band is known to its legion of faithful followers, is a tribute to the band’s late saxophonist, LeRoi Moore, who passed away after an accident last summer. For longtime Dave fans, who have eagerly awaited this record, it is a culmination of their nearly 20 years together in what could be considered their finest work yet, their crown jewel of studio recordings.
While each of their albums has a distinctive “flavor," this one is like fusion cuisine; there’s a lot going on, leaving even the hungriest musical tastes fully satisfied at the end. For those who will whet their appetites and try this one out, it is savory fare — and great car music, too. It will take you for a ride!
No need to skip any track. You’ll want to hear each and every song. As good as it sounds, keep in mind that DMB is a touring band and is best heard live. Kind of like the Grand Canyon: pictures are nice, but you really have to be there for the full experience.
It begins with some pre-recorded Moore breathing his soul into song, trailing into a punchy riff (reminiscent of Cameo’s “Word Up”) intro to “Shake Me Like A Monkey." Their albums can’t be complete until a monkey, dog or a bear show up! Common themes woven throughout Matthews lyrics are nature; the sky, stars, changing seasons, the element of water, and the carnal. This keeps the music real and grounded, but with the tendency to occasionally drift into the ethereal.
There is right blend of what I like to call “guy songs” and “girl songs”- from the earthy, guttural “Squirm” to the flowing “Lying in the Hands of God” and mellow “Dive In." There is also a radio friendly tune with “Funny the Way It Is." Katrina will not be forgotten in the funky scat of “Alligator Pie." I think Grux would have especially loved this one. The ending is upbeat and perfect, with the life-affirming and frolicking family song, “You and Me."

The Seventh Annual Vision 5K, National Championship of the US Association of Blind Athletes (USABA), set off at Boston College on June 7th. The Vision 5K is organized and benefits four organizations that serve the blind and visually impaired agencies. The Carroll Center for the Blind, Massachusetts Association for the Blind Community Services, National Braille Press, and Perkins School for the Blind raised over $75,000. The race included many sighted and blind runners as well as a blindfold challenge for sighted runners to experience running blind.
The 10th Annual Rhody 5K at Twin River in Lincoln, Rhode Island on June 7th, was part of the 5K USATF New England Grand Prix Championship series. The race raised over $62,000 for the Tomorrow Fund, Lincoln Days Committee and Twin River Greyhound Adoption Program. READ FULL STORY |

Bill's Pizza Expansion Back to the Drawing Board... Literally Bill's plans to withdraw plan for second building
Mr. Resnick told the board that his clients had decided to scale down their most recent proposal, and that he was present to request the hearing be postponed while a new plan is drawn up. The new proposal, which has yet to be submitted, omits the previous plan to have a second building in the rear, a circumstance that brought concerned residents from the neighborhood to this evening's meeting, unaware of the latest change. The residents spoke among themselves outside of the room after the meeting and expressed relief at the reduced expansion. Mr. Resnick believes his clients will move forward with the demolition, rebuilding and expansion of the existing building at 14 Main Street. The previous plan showed part of the very rear of that building with a newly constructed second floor. That plan increased the footprint by 8' in the rear and 2' in the driveway. The plan that was presented would have added 5 spaces to the current statutory deficit of 122 spaces and add an open storm water retention basin on the property, something that is not ordinarily done in downtown areas.

Hopkinton High School Class of '59
Hopkinton High School Class of 1959 50th held a reunion gathering this past weekend. Above are the graduates and spouses.
On Friday evening the class gathered at Carbone's Restaurant in Hopkinton for a social gathering. It was a favorite spot for the classmates during their High School years. Then on Saturday, July 18th, the class gathered again at Joseph F. Irvine Sr. house in Hopkinton for a day of Memory sharing, Memory making and fantastic food.
The daytime gathering was buffet brunch followed by an evening meal of Steamship Roast Beef catered by T.J. Spirits. The class celebrated together through out the weekend, fondly remembering their years together at HHS.
Honored guests Mr. & Mrs. Aubrey Doyle joined the class for the festivities. Mr. Doyle was the Class of 1959's class advisor. All enjoyed the events of the weekend wishing they could go on longer. |

July 18, 2009 — Two Hopkinton Firefighters observe a pole at Hopkinton Drug that broke at the ground and all of the implications surrounding its condition, such as (Mouse-over image for more details) a guy wire on the top that is strung to a Walcott Street pole, and is against the house/garage in the background, as well as a pole on Main Street being bent from the tension. Chief Ken Clark retrieved a dog from a car that a wire was laying on after the power was shut by NSTAR. According to one observer, the pole toppled immediately after a patron, who tied his bicycle to the pole, unchained it and began to leave. |

The Orange Crushes
The Hopkinton U12 Orange Crush softball team won the Bellingham U12 Softball Tournament last weekend as they came out on top of an extremely competitive field of 12 teams. The team is comprised exclusively of Hopkinton players who are in their first year ofU12 play and are competing against teams made up mostly of older second year U12 players. In the championship game last Sunday the Orange Crushe defeated the unbeaten# 1 seed, Taunton by the score of 8-5, as they rallied from down 4-3 to take the lead in the 4th inning.
In the finals the Hopkinton offense was led by the hitting of Brooke Martin, Holly Adams, Katelyn West, and Erin Keefe. Alissa Karjel and Juliet Hulme were outstanding on the mound on Sunday as they allowed only 9 runs over 3 playoff games. Julia Macchi, Julia Thissell, and Elise Carlson patrolled the outfield and all made great catches. Kayla Sullivan was flawless at second base making numerous plays. July 16, 2009 — Three Hayward Street senior citizens heading for the Board of Health were trapped for a dozen or so minutes in the Town Hall elevator, not the first time this has happened, but certainly the first for them, before being freed by the Hopkinton Fire Department. The married couple and a relative complained of being a little nervous, as well as hot. The temperature in Town Hall itself was a bit steamy. They eventually made it to the third floor, but took the stairs. |

July 15, 2009 — The original call for a boy with a stick impaled in his foot came in as being at the upper beach at Hopkinton State park. Another said it was near the boathouse. Neither were correct. The boy was in the picnic area leading to the Main Beach (lower beach), which is in Ashland. Both Ashland and Hopkinton responded until geographical jurisdiction could be determined. Both beaches are in the town of Ashland, but the boathouse is in Hopkinton. |

July
21, 2009 - (North Andover, Mass.) DMSE Sports produced five world class
sporting events across three states from June 7th to July 4th.
More than 23,000 people participated in the Vision 5K, Rhody 5K, Bellin
Run 10K, NStar's Walk for Children's Hospital Boston and the North
Andover 4th of July 10K Road Race. The five events raised
more than $1.6 million dollars for charity. DMSE has 11 events left to
manage and execute in their very busy calendar.
logistics shows that DMSE is up to any challenge. Providing their
clients with the conduit to raise millions of dollars for worthy
charities shows that these events mean much more than competition and
camaraderie among participants. They raise significant money and
awareness for so many worthwhile causes.

20, 2009 — Attorney Doug Resnick appeared before the Planning Board

Bill's Pizza, who also own pizza shops in at last two other towns in
Massachusetts, Paxton and Rochdale.

19, 2009 - This morning at approximately 12:55 a.m. Troopers assigned to
the State Police Barracks in Milton responded to a one-vehicle crash on
Route 24 South, near exit 20 (Central Street) in Stoughton that resulted
in one fatality.
