Two 14 year-old Boys Arrested for B&E at Middle School

Cruiser of Sgt. Wallace behind staged behind Middle School today while responding to the alarm. Two more cruisers were observed staged at other entrances to the school. Detective Timothy Brennan was called to respond.

June 28, 2009 — At about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sgt. Charles Wallace and Officer Patrick O'Brien responded to an alarm company's call of a motion detector being activated inside the Middle School, according to Hopkinton Police, and entered the building in search of the suspects.

Two 14 year-old boys were found still inside the school, and were taken into custody by Officer O'Brien. They will be charged with Breaking and Entering, and Larceny over $250, before a judge in juvenile court.

Police would not give out further details. Children under 17 are considered juveniles, and their identities are protected.

Is Your Cat Missing?

This cat has been hanging around our yard a bit this week. I think it is lost, and now it has something wrong with its front left leg (poss. broken).

It has long, gray fur with white under its chin and tips of its paws. It is VERY thin. It is crying, but won't let me approach it.

June 26, 2009 — Hopkinton Firefighters were summoned to Cumberland Farms to lift spilled gasoline from the area surrounding a pump after a mishap there today at around 7: p.m. today.

Authorities Seek Public's Assistance Finding Fugitive

BOSTON – June 26, 2009 — Authorities are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a Roxbury man who is a major drug distributor in the Greater Boston area and who has eluded police for the past four days. Christian Miranda, age 39, is considered to be armed and dangerous and faces charges of Trafficking in Cocaine over 100 grams, Conspiracy to Violate the Controlled Substances Act, and Illegal Possession of a Firearm (2 Counts).

An ongoing joint investigation conducted by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Attorney General’s Office and the Boston Police Department developed information that Christian Miranda was involved in distributing large amounts of cocaine in the Boston area. On June 22, 2009, authorities received information that Miranda would be conducting a drug transaction that day with an associate. Authorities went to the location where the transaction was to take place and observed Miranda and his associate. Detectives arrested two men a short distance from the location, Joselito Torres Vasquez, age 31, and Miguel Pena, age 32, whom authorities believe to be Miranda’s drug suppliers. Later that evening, surveillance conducted by investigators located Miranda at a location in Dorchester. Miranda left the location with other individuals in a vehicle that was subsequently followed by police. Detectives attempted a motor vehicle stop on that car. At this point, the car fled from police and authorities made a motor vehicle pursuit. A short time later, the vehicle stopped and Miranda exited the vehicle and began to flee on foot. At this time, the driver of the vehicle began to follow an officer and attempted to run down the officer. The vehicle was subsequently stopped and the operator of the vehicle, Azell Martin, age 29, was arrested. After a lengthy foot pursuit authorities were unable to locate Miranda and the chase was suspended.

In the course of the investigation, police recovered two firearms believed to belong to Miranda and seized over 100 grams of cocaine.

Miranda is described as a light-skinned black male, approximately 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with a stocky build. He is estimated to weight approximately 215 pounds. Photos of Miranda can be seen on the Attorney General’s website. Authorities believe Miranda has family connections in North Carolina, specifically in the Rocky Mount area. Investigators also believe he may have connections in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Miranda has access to firearms and police believe he may be armed.

New York Man Indicted In Connection With Shooting Death At Harvard University

WOBURN – A New York man has been indicted in connection with the shooting death of Justin Cosby (Photo), 21, of Cambridge, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public today.

Jabrai Jordan Copney, 20, of New York City, New York, was indicted late yesterday by a Middlesex Grand Jury on counts of first degree murder, accessory after the fact of murder, attempt to commit a crime, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm. An arraignment date has not yet been scheduled.

According to authorities, on Monday, May 18, at approximately 4:48 p.m., the Harvard University Police responded to the University’s Kirkland House located on Dunster Street in Cambridge on reports of shots fired. Cambridge Police were also notified and responded to the scene.

Cosby, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen, had left the Kirkland House student dormitory and stumbled to the intersection of Dunster Street and Mount Auburn Street. He was transported to Beth Israel Hospital and pronounced dead on May 19.

Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Cambridge Police, and Harvard Police began an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.

Based on that investigation, it was determined that Copney and two other suspects, none of whom were students at Harvard University, arranged for a meeting with Cosby for the purpose of obtaining marijuana and robbing Cosby. The three men met Cosby in a common area inside Kirkland House and, during the course of the confrontation, multiple shots were fired. One of those shots struck Cosby, resulting in his death.

Copney and the two other suspects involved fled the scene and returned to New York City on a bus from Boston that evening.

On May 21, Copney turned himself in to authorities at the Cambridge Police Station. On May 22, he was arraigned in Cambridge District Court on charges of murder, accessory after the fact to murder, and possession of a firearm. He was ordered held without bail.

On June 9, Blayn Jiggetts, 19, a.k.a. “Bliz,” of Mount Vernon, New York and a friend of Copney, was arrested in Harlem by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Cambridge Police, and detectives from the New York City Police Manhattan North Homicide Unit. Jiggetts was arrested on a Massachusetts warrant charging him with first degree murder, accessory after the fact of murder, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm. On June 10, he was charged in Manhattan Criminal Court as a fugitive from justice. He has not waived rendition at this time and is expected back in the New York court on July 8. His rendition to Massachusetts is expected sometime this summer, when he will answer the charges in a Massachusetts court.

This investigation is ongoing into the circumstances of the shooting, as well as into any others who may have been involved in or know about the circumstances of this incident.

These charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The prosecutor assigned to the case is Assistant District Attorney and Senior Trial Counsel Daniel Bennett. The victim witness advocate is Helena Clarke. The case is being investigated by Harvard University Police, Cambridge Police, and the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

Ms. Kane’s 1^st Grade Center School Put on Aesop’s Fables

June26, 2009 — The parents, together with the children, spent much time making their costumes and scenery. The kids tirelessly memorized their lines so that they could perform without scripts which was quite an undertaking for a first grade class! This happened on the afternoon a week ago.

They performed David, Daphne and the Wolf, Leo the Lion and Tiny Mouse, Mr. Fox and Miss Crow, The Naughty Dog, T.J. Tortoise and Harry Hare, Zac the Bat Makes a Mistake.

After the performance they entertained us with poetry. The event was followed by a big, rain-free cast party after school. ~Kathryn Curry

Fatal Crash on Route 495 in Chelmsford

Driver not wearing seat belt, ejected, dies.

UPDATE

June 25, 2009 — This evening, at approximately 10:25 p.m., Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Concord responded to a single vehicle crash on Route 495 North just north of Route 4 (exit 33) in Chelmsford that resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Richard Cronin indicates that 33-year-old Joanna E. Soucy of Tyngsboro was operating a 2000 Dodge Caravan on Route 495 North when she lost control of the vehicle and rolled over into the median. Soucy, who was not wearing a safety belt, was ejected, sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Chelmsford Fire Department and MassHighway assisted troopers at the scene. As of 11:30 p.m., the highway was still closed.

WIFE OF DARRYL MCCAULEY ARRESTED, TO BE ARRAIGNED IN CONNECTION WITH STEALING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FROM DANE COOK

June 25, 2009 — Today, the wife of Darryl McCauley, former business manager for entertainer Dane Cook (Video clip, right), was arrested at her home in connection with allegedly stealing millions of dollars from Cook. Erika McCauley, age 37, of Wilmington, was expected to be arraigned in Woburn District Court today on charges of Larceny by Scheme and Receiving/Concealing Stolen Property.

Leon Eugene Mason, 89

Leon Eugene Mason, 89, of Hopkinton, died Sunday, June 21, 2009 at the Park Avenue Nursing and Rehab Center in Arlington. Born in Natick, he was the son of the late Ralph and Minnie (Hayes) Mason.

A Hopkinton resident since 1949 and formerly of Natick, he was an Army Veteran in WWII and served from Jan. 1941-Oct. 1945. He was involved in three campaigns; Corregidor, Leyte, and New Guinea Campaigns. After the war, he worked at Dennison Manufacturing from 1946-1979. SEE COMPLETE ARRANGEMENTS

Hopkinton Police Dept. Conducts Alcohol stings

June 25, 2009 — The Hopkinton Police Department in partnership with MADD Massachusetts’ Youth in Action conducted minimum age purchase law compliance checks in the Town of Hopkinton as part of its participation in the 2009 Underage Alcohol Enforcement Grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

Three separate compliance checks were conducted on March 27, May 1 and May 28, 2009.

We are very pleased to report that all of the establishments licensed to sell alcoholic beverages in the Town of Hopkinton carded the underage operative and no sales were made on 35 separate compliances checks conducted.

The Hopkinton Police Department has made the Board of Selectmen, who are the licensing authority in the Town of Hopkinton and the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission aware of the results. The management of each of the licensed establishments was also made aware of the results.

We know that alcohol is the No.1 drug problem among youth killing more young people than all other illicit drugs combined. Frequent oversight of alcohol retailers increases compliance.

Preventing underage drinking is everyone’s responsibility. Activities such as compliance checks monitor and encourage establishments to make sure youth don’t have easy access to alcohol.

Additional compliance checks will be scheduled to ensure that these very encouraging results continue.

This activity is made possible by funding from the 2009 Underage Alcohol Enforcement Grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety & Security.

June 25, 2009 — Elizabeth Road residents, Kimberly and Paul Winshman, are in the process of adding two new restaurants to their group, which currently includes Maria's in Milford, and Zio Paolo's in Medway. They plan on opening Zio Ostria in Bellingham, and if everything goes well — beginning with an All-alcoholic beverage license application before the Selectmen on Tuesday — Zio's Bistro in Hopkinton at 15 Main Street, the location of the former Sauce on Main.

According to Mr. Winshman, Zio means uncle in Italian, and is so named for the type of food he offers. He said today that the menu will be similar in quality, with some select Mediterranean and Italian specialties, and be take-out friendly.

He said that the restaurant is challenged in size — his application calls for adding a bar with 14 seats to the floor plan for the previous restaurant, which was approved for 16 seats — and so will be an "adult restaurant" with family-sized portions for takeout.

Mr. Winshman said he has signed a 2 year lease with several options to extend it "if it proves to be welcomed by the town."

"My wife and I are aware of the needs for some services within the town, and believe that with our track record, experience and resources, we have an understanding of what are the needs of the local folks — and we are ready to provide them."

NOTE: On Tuesday, among other things, Selectmen will hear the new license application pleas for Zio's Bistro and The Marathon Restaurant at North Pond; the possible license revocation for the former Maria's Caffe Italiano, and the application for a license transfer from Star Package Store to Kork Corporation, dba Hopkinton Liquors, a company owned at least in part by Paul Mastroianni, owner of the shopping center at 77 West Main Street, which has undergone a renewal and expansion under his watch.

State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 495 North in Marlboro

UPDATE

June 24, 2009 — Today at approximately 3:40 p.m. Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Leominster responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 495 North, near Route 20 (exit 24) in Marlboro that resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Timothy Foley indicates that a 1999 Ford Ranger operated by 46 year-old Stuart Baird of Yarmouth was traveling on Route 495 North in the second travel lane from the right when he attempted to pass a 2004 Nissan Altima operated by 21 year-old Jorge Santiago of Hudson and struck it in the left rear. Both vehicles lost control and exited the roadway onto the center median. Baird was partially ejected and sustained fatal injuries. He was declared deceased at the scene. Santiago was uninjured.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Marlboro Fire, Marlboro Police, the Medical Examiners Office and MassHighway assisted troopers at the scene.

Recent Vehicle & Garage Thefts

Resident ALERT

Call 508-497-3401 to report trouble or crime

In recent weeks the Hopkinton Police Department has had several reports of thefts from vehicles parked in residential driveways and in open or unlocked garages.

In most cases the items that have been stolen are easily transportable items such as cash, cell phones, IPOD type devices and GPS devices that have been left in the cars.

Investigation has found that in the vast majority of these thefts the vehicles and garages have been left unlocked. The investigation revealed that these thefts have primarily occurred during the overnight hours.

The Hopkinton Police Department strongly advises residents:

1. Do not leave valuables in your vehicle

2. Make sure your vehicles are locked

3. Make sure that you lock your garage doors

4. Install motion sensor lights around garage and driveway areas to deter thieves

The Hopkinton Police Department requests that residents immediately report;

1. Any suspicious vehicles that may be seen in your neighborhood

2. Any suspicious person that may be walking in your neighborhood especially late night or early morning hours.

3. Report any suspicious activity or noises

June 24, 2009 — This is it, the moment everyone's been waiting for! The RUMMAGE SALE at the Senior Center! That’s right, the weekend of the sale is finally here! It all starts on Friday, June 26^th from 9 am to 7 pm, Saturday, June 27 from 9 am-3 pm and Sunday, June 28 from 9 am-1 pm.

Any kind of item you might be looking for, I’m sure you’ll find it at the Rummage Sale…and the best part is that you’ll get it for a bargain! There’s kitchen gadgets, knick knacks, garden and hardware sections, utensils, baskets, frames — you name it, just about anything you need. There’s a gigantic clothing section; just about any size you might be looking for! You’ll see a whole room full of linens, a room just for baby clothes and items, and a room just for toys. Toys, toys and more toys! The library is full of books and videos, more than you can even imagine! This is a HUGE sale; you really won’t want to miss it!

I can’t even begin to tell you how hard the staff and volunteers have been working to get this sale ready. They’ve been collecting and sorting for months, day after day, hour after hour, and boy, have they all done an amazing job. They certainly deserve a special "CHEERS!"

The Rummage Sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Seniors and it’s one of their largest fundraisers for the Senior Center. The money raised helps support the Transportation and Nutrition programs since these are not funded by the Town. Everything you buy at this sale not only helps you because you’ll get it at a great price, but you’ll also be helping the senior center. Don’t forget that Sunday is BAG DAY—everything you can fit in a bag for one low price!

The very next day, June 29, the center will be closed for the week and will re-open on Monday, July 6^th. This is sort of a housekeeping vacation, where the staff can catch up on a lot of office work and the maintenance crew and some volunteers will be giving the place a good once over! This week covers the July 4^th holiday also!

Since the center will be closed next week, I’ll see you in two weeks and give you a full report on the sale. See you at the Rummage Sale!

Neither Wind Nor Rain...

June 24, 2009 — Two of Hopkinton’s finest, Sgt. Joseph Bennett and Patrolman Stephen Buckley, enjoy a great day of golf at Juniper Hills in Northborough for the Billy Webber Memorial Golf Tournament on Monday to benefit Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Billy was the Chief of Police in Southborough and passed away in November of 2008 after an 18-month battle with pancreatic cancer. The wind and rain did not deter over 200 people for showing up to support the memory of a great guy and a great cause. ~Kathy LaFlash

Record Setting Relay

June 23, 2009 — Four Hopkinton High School track team members competed on June 19 in the 4 X 800 relay at the Nike Outdoor National Track Meet in Greensboro North Carolina with some of the best high school athletes from across the country. The relay team, comprised of Brianna Roche, Molly Kessler, Kim Bolick and Kelly Lodge (Photo) won a fourth place medal with a time that set a new school and TVL record. In the fall, Molly Kessler will be attending Assumption College and Brianna Roche will be attending Franklin and Marshall College. Kelly Lodge and Kim Bolick will be juniors next year running for Hopkinton High School.

Marlborough Man Arrested, Arraigned In Connection With Saturday’s Framingham Homicide

FRAMINGHAM – June 23, 2009 — A Marlborough man has been arrested and arraigned in connection with the murder of Tyriffe Lewis, 17, of Marlborough, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone and Framingham Police Chief Steven Carl informed the public today.

Marquise Brown, 17, of Marlborough, was arrested this morning at the Framingham Police Department on charges of first degree murder, illegal possession of a firearm, and illegal possession of ammunition. He was arraigned on those charges in Framingham District Court and ordered held without bail by Judge Paul Healy.

“This defendant and the victim were engaged in a physical and verbal confrontation on Friday evening,” District Attorney Leone said. “We allege that the defendant went to the park with the victim the next day, shooting the unarmed victim in retaliation for what transpired between them the day before. I want to commend the work of the Framingham and Marlborough Police, along with the Massachusetts State Police, for their thorough, cooperative investigation into this homicide.”

On Saturday, June 20, at approximately 2:15 p.m., Framingham Police responded to reports of an unresponsive male on a wooded trail within the Callahan State Park off Edmands Road in Framingham.

Upon arrival, they found the deceased male with multiple gunshot wounds.

Framingham Police and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office began an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.

Based on that investigation, it alleged that the defendant, victim and others were at a series of parties Friday evening in Marlborough. The victim and defendant got into both verbal and physical confrontations while at those parties, with the victim ultimately getting the best of the defendant in the physical confrontation. The following day, June 20, the defendant and victim were at the Callahan State Park. The defendant allegedly brought a handgun with him and shot the victim in the chest and hip.

Getting to Know You

June 23, 2009 — Hopkinton Town Manager Norman Khumalo, photo left, was the guest of honor at a breakfast sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce at Ciao Time this morning for members to meet the new town official. Rummage Sale Preparations

Maxine Adams to Try Retirement

Our beloved Assistant Town Clerk, Mrs. Maxine Adams, has decided to give retirement a whirl. She will be finishing over 30 years of employment with the Town on June 30^th. We are asking anyone who may have Maxine memories to send them along for the memory board Annc@hopkinton.org. Also, we are having desserts from 1-3 PM on June 30^th for any well wishers who may want to stop by.

Car Crashes Through Store

June 22, 2009 — A driver, who sources say doesn't remember a thing, crashed her BMW through the front door of Cumberland Farms on West Main Street last evening, pushing retail gondolas through to the rear wall of the interior. Rescuers ended up cutting the positive terminal of the electrical system. Skid marks can be seen inside the store, made when the tow truck had to drag the vehicle to get it out. The wheels would not unlock without the electrical and battery working.

According to reports, the victim was taken into police custody, but apparently let go after passing sobriety testing. Authorities now believe that there may have been a medical cause to the situation, although none would speak on record. The Cumberland Farms Manager said she has spent the day asking members of the press to leave the property.

UPDATE: A call into Cumberland Farms corporate office to request the video footage has been returned, the spokesperson saying it is company policy not to provide videos. The crash comes at an inopportune time, as the company just celebrated its grand opening last week, and saw an increase in sales as a result of a restructuring of their prepared food offerings, and redesigned store and brand. In addition, it has shed its Gulf logos, a brand it owns, in favor of the Cumberland farms brand, whose soft, pleasing colors fall into the pastel range.

Cumberland Farms Crash June 21, 2009

Incident 2009-6065

On Sunday June 21, 2009 at about 11:03: PM the Hopkinton Police Department responded to the Cumberland Farms at 91 West Main St. for a report of motor vehicle had crashed through the front of the building and travelled through the building hitting the back wall of the store.

Officers Higgins and Moran arrived at the scene and found no one injured. They observed that a Black BMW Sedan had crashed through the front of the building and went through to the back wall.

The Cumberland Farms building sustained considerable damage. The Hopkinton Fire Department responded to the scene. The Hopkinton Municipal Inspections Director was contacted to examine the building’s structural integrity.

The vehicle was operated by a 57 year old woman who is a resident of Milford. She was not injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time.

June 22, 2009 — The planting of flags at the Evergreen Cemetery on the graves of veterans by the Girl and Boy Scouts still looks fresh, as America is about to celebrate its birthday on July 4.

June 22, 2009 — Eight Hopkinton High School freshman helped transform a patch of weeds at 73 Grove Street, a Respite Center group home, into a well kept property on Saturday.

The materials, as well as the professional supervision — and a lawnmower — were donated by Hopkinton Stone & Garden.

June 21, 2009 — This gas pump seen on Fruit Street cautions that the product contains lead, but the pump is so old, the peeling paint probably does, too. The sepia-toned type of color befits its age.

Ball Drop Brings in $7,500

June 21, 2009 — On behalf of The Hopkinton Education Foundation, I would like to thank our community for their enthusiasm and generosity toward our 2^nd Annual Golf Ball Drop fundraising event. Sponsored by Chuck Joseph and Bill Wright of RE/MAX Executive Realty, the “Drop” was a huge success bringing in $7500 that will be used toward funding the next cycle of educational grant awards to the Hopkinton Public Schools.

Congratulations go to our grand prize winners, Alicia Abu Simmons of Hopkinton and Sophie Zangara of Short Hills, New Jersey. Both their golf balls (lucky numbers 908 and 915) landed in the hole, so they split the $1000 prize. The $100 consolation prize for the ball that landed the furthest from the “pin” was awarded to Nicole Prefontaine of Hopkinton.
