Hopkinton Middle School IGNITE Program

5th Grade Parents Take Note

June 16, 2009

Dear Parent of an Incoming 6th Grader,

We are very excited that your child will be attending the Hopkinton Middle School in September and we look forward to meeting you at our orientation for incoming 6th grade parents on Thursday, August 27 in the Middle School auditorium. At the parent orientation we will share information about the Middle School and attempt to give you a flavor of what your sixth grader will be experiencing during the orientation with 8th grade IGNITE Leaders and Mr. Howard. The parent portion of the day is optional. We understand parents have work commitments and may have younger siblings at home that require attention. Yet, we encourage you to attend. If we do not see you on August 27, we look forward to meeting you at the Middle School “Back to School Night” scheduled September 10 in the evening. Keep your eye on the Middle School website for a start time. The Middle School website offers a great deal of information regarding the Middle School for students and parents.

We are extremely energized to meet your child at our IGNITE Orientation Day on August 27. This August will mark our third 6th grade IGNITE orientation. We were pleased 250+ students attended each of first two IGNITE orientations voluntarily. The orientations exceeded even our own expectations. Sixth grade teachers have commented that the 6th graders the past two school openings have seemed more comfortable and better adjusted than in previous years.

The IGNITE sixth grade orientation and transition program is designed to both welcome and support sixth graders by assigning them to a small group led by 1-2 IGNITE Leaders as mentors during their first year of middle school. IGNITE leaders are responsible 8th grade students selected from a large pool of applicants and all meet the qualifications of being a good role model and a positive leader on our campus. The following is some information to let you know what you and your child can expect in advance of her/his first day of school:

1) A day or two before the orientation, your child will receive a phone call from his or her IGNITE Leader personally inviting your student to orientation day and giving details of where to be and what time to arrive.

2) Your student is encouraged NOT to bring backpacks, purses, school supplies or other like items for the orientation day.

3) Lunch will not be served. We will provide snack and water during the orientation program.

4) Because the day is active, please make sure that you and your student wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement and can be worn inside and outside.

The students only orientation will take place in the Brown Gymnasium led by the eighth grade IGNITE Leaders and Mr. Bill Howard from 9AM – 11:30AM. The parent orientation will take place in the Middle School auditorium led by Mr. Jason Webster and/or Mr. Keith Verra from 9AM- 10:30AM.

We look forward to meeting you and your student on orientation day!

Rough Hands Remembered, but a Gentle Side Discovered

by Pastor Robert L. Dowen

June 15, 2009 — On this upcoming Father’s Day I want to acknowledge my dad, a Hopkinton resident for over fifty years, who died in February 2007.

Donald R. Dowen (Don) was an automobile mechanic all of his life. He worked on cars, motor scooters and just about anything else that had a motor. The last years of his life…right up to his death…were occupied working on lawnmowers. Many Hopkinton residents will remember him working on their lawnmowers in the driveway of his Wood Street home in Woodville.

Shortly after his death, while going through stacks of papers on his back porch, I came across a penciled drawing of a ship that he had drawn as a teenager – not too long before enlisting in the Army and entering WW II.  I was rather artistic when I was a teenager, and I guess I found from whom I received the artistic talent.

This penciled drawing of The Abraham Rydberg  (A  full-rigged steel ship built in 1912, Stockholm), reveals the gentler side of the man that most remember with the rough, grease -covered mechanics hands.

I never really saw this side of my dad while he was alive. To his wife and children he was strong, hard-working, and took care of his family. But, his gentle side was seldom seen.

Dads come in all types, shapes and sizes. I believe that beneath the rough, tough exterior of most dads there is a gentle side. The side that quietly expresses love for God and country. The side that holds deep love for family. And the side that holds grand-babies in rough, calloused hands.

I’m reminded on this Father’s Day of the gentler side of my dad, through an old penciled drawing lost  in a pile of loose papers and old periodicals. This original drawing is now framed and proudly displayed in my nautically inspired office. Each time I glance upon The Abraham Rydberg  a strong yet gentle sailing ship, penciled on paper and hanging on my wall…it is the reminder of my dad etched into my heart.

I too am a dad…just sailing along! It is my prayer that my children will always know the gentle side of me.

We should seek out and find the gentler side of our dads while they are still with us!

EMC Reiterates Its $30 Per Share All-Cash Tender Offer to Acquire Data Domain Is Superior

HOPKINTON, Mass. - June 15, 2009 EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC),the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today reiterated that its all-cash offer to acquire all outstanding common stock of Data Domain, Inc. (NASDAQ: DDUP) for $30.00 per share is superior to the NetApp part-stock counter offer.

Joe Tucci (File photo), EMC Chairman, President and CEO, said, “We believe that EMC’s $30 all-cash offer is superior and delivers to Data Domain price certainty and price protection as well as the ability to close promptly.  We note that, as indicated in NetApp’s June 3rd Form S-4 filing, Data Domain communicated to NetApp that ‘price certainty and protection against fluctuations [in] NetApp’s common stock were important to Data Domain.’ We also note that on several occasions, Data Domain requested NetApp to increase the cash portion of its offer as well as the range of the collar.

Tucci added, “EMC’s all-cash offer meets all of Data Domain’s stated objectives. We do not believe that Data Domain stockholders will approve the proposed transaction with NetApp. EMC remains committed to successfully completing this transaction. ”

As previously disclosed, EMC will use existing cash balances to finance the transaction.

Medicare Question of the Month

Question: Can I wait to enroll in Medicare if I have health coverage through COBRA?

Answer: If you are 65 or older when you stop working, you have 8 months to sign up for Medicare Part B without having to pay a "late enrollment penalty". If you have the option to continue your employee coverage through COBRA, it is very important to understand that COBRA DOES NOT PROTECT YOU from a "late enrollment penalty" if you go beyond the 8 months.
If your COBRA coverage has "creditable" drug coverage, you have 63 days from the time your COBRA coverage ends to enroll in a Medicare drug plan (Part D) and avoid a "late enrollment penalty" for Part D.

For assistance with this or other Medicare issues, call 508-532-5980 x4120 or the Hopkinton Senior Center at 508497-9730, and ask for a free appointment with a certified SHINE counselor.

Good News Travels Fast

To the Editor:

All too often we hear complaints publicly rendered, when the day to day or even extraordinary good jobs go largely unnoticed. I am writing to say thank you…to the Hopkinton School Department for their terrific handling of the situation following the events in Washington DC this week. True enough they were just doing their jobs, but they reacted quickly, completely and sensibly. As a parent of one of those young people who came frighteningly close to the violence at the Holocaust Museum, I so appreciate the efforts to fully and quickly inform us of our children’s well-being.

I first heard that shots were fired in the DC Museum just before 2PM from a co-worker. I checked on-line and found that no students were reportedly involved—big relief, then I called a neighbor whose husband is on the trip-but couldn’t reach her for news. Picking up my cell phone next, I had the confirmation I needed that all was well. I called home to inform my adult children, but they had already heard the reverse 9-1-1 call. Then I called my husband at work who had also just hung up his cell from the same call. Accounting for time to learn of the event, ascertain the safety of our kids and craft the message—I just can’t see how the School Department could have been done the job better, more completely or more quickly. My thanks to the professionals involved in this response effort.

Thanks also to the chaperones and adults on the trip; the different bus loads of kids were told various levels of detail about the events but all were told to call or text their parents. What a huge relief for us all to get that message from our kids so quickly.

Many thanks to all involved.

Change in Bus Policy Would Ban Day to Day Switching K-5*

Committee seeks input

*A reporting error had the grades wrong

by Derek Dobachesky

June 12, 2009 — The Hopkinton School Committee reviewed a draft of changes to its student transportation policy and heard reports on the Hopkins, High School and Middle School at its regular meeting on June 11, 2009.

"It's gotten out of hand," Committee member Rebecca Robak said of student bus switching. Bus switching is one of the main issues the draft of the new policy seeks to address. The Committee viewed data obtained from the Hopkins and Center schools on bus switching at the meeting.

The draft of the student transportation policy, as the Committee agreed last week, would ban day-to-day bus switching for all kindergarten through fifth grade students if adopted. The draft would permit switching only on a year-long basis to up to two child care locations. Currently, 130 such arrangements exist for children at those grade levels.

The draft of the policy was not voted on at the meeting. It will be posted on the policies section of the Hopkinton School Committee's Web site for input from parents, and will be addressed again at the regular Committee meeting on June 18.

Committee chair Nancy Alvarez Burdick encouraged parents to comment on the policy before Wednesday, June 17, so that the Committee can take those comments into account when considering adoption of the draft of the policy. Any changes the Committee approves will not go into effect until fall 2010.

Superintendent Dr. John Phelan stated that the Committee is seeking to address issues of safety, student stress and interruption of class time by changing the policy. "It's probably not an exaggeration to say that the last 10 minutes of class in
earlier grades are used trying to coordinate students' transportation," Dr. Phelan said. Dr. Phelan also acknowledged that any change will likely be painful for parents at first, but noted that parents in other towns have adapted to similar changes in policy after an initial outcry. Burdick then noted that parents will have more than a year from the adoption of the policy to adjust to the changes.

Hopkins School Principal Martha Starr presented on the school's improvement plan. The schools goals for the current year focused on encouraging desired social behavior, curtailing bullying online and through cell phones and promoting recycling. Next year's goals are to improve students' grammar skills by 20 percent by June and to increase open response English Language Arts and math scores by 15 percent on the grade four and five MCAS exams.

High School Principal Dr. John McCarthy presented his school's improvement plan. One major area the plan addresses is a complete review of the school's graduation requirements and changes to bring them into alignment with the Massachusetts Core Curriculum that the MA Department of Education has released and strongly encourages schools to follow. Major changes will include requiring two years of foreign language, three years of science, and four years of math and wellness. Other goals for the high school are that all students in the class of 2013 will have an online experience and 75 percent will have a service learning experience. Dr. McCarthy has also set a goal of creating a committee to coordinate High School and Middle School scheduling to be overseen by his successor as principal.

Middle School Principal William Lynch present his school's improvement plan. Next year's goals include promoting internet safety and recycling, posting homework assignments on blogs so parents can better monitor students' school work and familiarizing student and teachers with other Web tools for use in the classroom.

Dr. Phelan spoke of the ongoing budget process, which is not yet complete because the state legislature has not passed its final budget. The House and Senate budgets are still currently in conference committee, where differences between the two versions will be reconciled to create a final version. The Boston Globe recently reported that all of Massachusetts' 2011 stimulus funds for education have been used. Hopkinton Public Schools recently submitted a proposal to use 2011 stimulus grant funding for special education in the 2010 fiscal year because Gov. Deval Patrick has cut that funding and instead encouraged schools to use 2011 stimulus funds.

Representatives Carolyn Dykema and Senator Karen Spilka will be holding public office hours in the Hopkinton Public Library on Monday, June 15 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., and members of the Committee encouraged residents to attend to express their views on the budget known.

The Committee also heard a report from HPTA co-presidents Patty Doshier and Judy Lankford. Doshier and Lankford reported that the HPTA, in total, raised $119,000 this school year and increased membership by 29 percent. It also went paperless, sending out all flyers by e-mail. Doshier and Lankford highlighted the achievements of the three seniors who received scholarships, Hope Pellberg, Lindsay Kramer and James Paras. All were active volunteers. Kramer spoke to the Committee.

The Hopkinton School Committee will meet on Thursday, June 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Middle School Library for its last regular meeting of the school year.

HPTA Awards Three Scholarships

June 12, 2009 — The HPTA has awarded three scholarships this year to graduating seniors whose high school career have embodied “the Spirit of Volunteerism.” This year’s winners are Hope Hellberg, Lindsay Kramer, and James Paras. Each of these three students volunteered countless hours of their time to help, serve, and improve the lives and environments of those around them both within Hopkinton High School and the greater Hopkinton community. Furthermore these young adults have taken the initiative to begin and foster some of these activities. “This is my fourth year on the Scholarship Committee and I am continually astounded at what the students here in Hopkinton take on and accomplish.” said Maureen Belger, Scholarship Committee Chair. The scholarship winners were announced at Senior Recognition Night on June 4th and presented by the HPTA to the School Committee and all of Hopkinton at the meeting on June 11th.

Hope Hellberg will be attending Savannah College of Art 7 Design in September. Hope has been a Leo Club member and was president her senior year. Hope was instrumental in obtaining volunteers to work at many HPTA functions as well as numerous events throughout Hopkinton. She herself volunteered at many of them. Hope was also a participant in the Relay for Life, a member of the National Honor Society, a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. Hope has also volunteered at Ditmas House, a place for people coming at of jail. At Ditmas House she cooked for, served and ate and talked with the participants in the program.

Lindsay Kramer (Photo, rear, center) has organized the Thanksgiving Turkey Drive supporting the Salvation Army for the past tow years. Lindsay has also spent time each week at the Senior Center. One of Lindsay’s largest contributions to the community has been through her work with Best Buddies. She has been involved for the past 3 years; this past one serving as chapter president. Lindsay will be attending Hamilton College in the fall.

Jamas Paras will be a freshman at Providence College in the fall. James has been a UNITE Mentor and of Be Free. For the past three years James has volunteered to work and run the early release day program for elementary school students. James has spent countless hours over his high school career as a volunteer coach for special needs athletes as part of the East Coast Jumbos Youth Hockey.

The HPTA is proud to honor each of these students with a $1,000 scholarship. The HPTA’s mission is to support the enrichment and betterment of the Hopkinton Public School through direct volunteers and donations and by providing a forum of communication between parents, teachers, administrators and community. June 11, 2009 — The Hopkinton Board of Appeals has scheduled a Public Hearing on July 8, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. to hear testimony for a Special Permit to apply for the expansion of the Golden Pond Facility at 50 West Main Street, the modernization of its programs and the construction of additional buildings on adjacent property.

The existing 64,566 square foot facility, which is defined as a Medical Care  Facility in the town's hearing notice, seeks to add a dining area of 960 square on the northern side of the building, and a 447 square foot bridge connecting to the proposed new building on the other end, in what it calls Phase 2.

In addition, the day care facility will move to the new 25,211 square foot building on the southern end of the property abutting West Main Street that will offer the same services the existing facility offers. According to the permit application, "The building will serve as the primary location for the child care facility, will house up to 14 beds for elderly housing, and will provide additional space for Golden Pond’s expanded acute care and rehabilitation services."

The permit further states, "Phase 3 will consist of a 30,000 square foot addition to the 65,973 square foot Phase 2 building at 50 West Main Street. The new 95,973 square foot Medical Care Facility will contain an additional 44 beds and offices for acute care physicians, rehabilitation specialists, and other medical care providers."

A photo of the drawing for Phase 2 is below. Phase 3, the 30,000 square foot expansion, is not represented below. That is a separate drawing.

The company will be represented at the hearing by former longtime Board of Appeals member, Attorney Wayne Davies.

DA's Teen Dating PSA Contest Winner

SOMERVILLE June 11, 2009 — A Public Service Announcement submitted by a team of students from Somerville High School has been chosen as the winner of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Teen Dating Violence PSA Project, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone’s office informed the public today. The PSA was chosen as the winner by a vote of more than 1000 high school students across Middlesex County and will now be submitted to local television stations for possible airing across the state.

The winning entry, entitled “A Cry For Help,” was submitted by a group of students from Somerville High School. The students involved in the video were: Mitch Freitas, Jason Corey, Aakash Sharma, Jerry Alphonse, Anthony Bohan, and Stefanie Vivian. To view the winning video, please click here.

The District Attorney’s Teen Dating Violence PSA project, created in conjunction with Middlesex Partnerships For Youth, Inc. and REACH Beyond Domestic Violence, was initiated in an effort to spark a positive dialogue and encourage teens to speak out against teen dating violence. Launched in April, it asked high school students from throughout Middlesex County to create and produce their own PSAs on the issue of teen dating violence.

A total of 35 entries were submitted by more than 200 students from throughout the county. The six PSA finalists were then selected from those entries by a panel of school personnel, domestic violence experts, and members of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

Those six PSA finalists were then viewed and voted on by more than 1000 high school students in health and physical education classes throughout Middlesex County.

“This was a project for teens by teens, and our hope with the project was to help spark a positive dialogue about healthy relationships,” District Attorney Leone said. “We want to congratulate today’s winner and commend all of the students who participated in this project for their leadership in speaking out against teen dating violence. They have helped send a clear message that physical and verbal abuse have no place in a healthy relationship.”
