May 27, 2009 — Thanks to Ellen and Don Mace for sharing a photo Don took over the weekend of this hummingbird they lured with sweet stuff in their newly constructed hummingbird feeder.

 Senior Moments

Give a Little Bit

Donor Ray Gendreau with American Red Cross nurses Noelle, Carol and Heather

(Punky)

May 27, 2009 — There was a steady stream of “patients” at the Senior Center this past Friday, all ready to donate blood to the American Red Cross.   It was the first blood drive to be held at the center, so it was nice to see not only seniors, but also other people from the town there to donate.  One of the donors, Jack Palitsch, has donated 148 times for a total of about 18 ½ gallons!  That’s a lot of blood!  It was number 40 for Tom Ellam who started donating back in 1973.   Cheers to everyone who donated this day to the American Red Cross Blood Bank!

Along with the Blood Drive, there was also the Plant Sale, Part 1.  (Part 2 will be held this Friday, May 29 from 9-2 and Saturday, from 9-12)     The tomato plants were a big hit; I even bought a couple for myself.   There’s a bunch of other kinds of vegetable plants ready to go, plus a great assortment of beautiful flowers.  Don’t worry, there will be plenty left for the sale this weekend.

Are you looking forward to Enter Stage Left’s USO show that will be held next weekend?    Last year’s performance was such a success that they’re coming back for more!  Everyone raved so much about it then, that I was sorry I didn’t go myself.   This year I’m not going to miss it!   The dates for the three shows are Friday, June 5 at 7:30 and Saturday, June 6 at 2:00 and 7:30.   Something very important you should know—if you are a World War II veteran, you can get a free ticket, so don’t miss out on this awesome show—just come up to the Senior Center to pick it up.   See you all there!

The Rummage Sale will be coming up before you know it.  The dates this year are June 26, 27 and 28.  More on that later.

What a great Memorial Day it was here in Hopkinton.  The ceremonies at all the cemeteries and at the Common were just beautiful and very well attended.  It was such a touching way to honor the veterans of our town.

That’s it for now, so if you have any comments or suggestions, you can email me:  Punkala@aol.com.  Until next time, have a great week!

Hopkinton Education Foundation (HEF)

Announces 2009 Grant Awards Totaling $42,500

May 26, 2009 — The Hopkinton Education Foundation (HEF) awarded eleven grants totaling over $42,500 to schools in the Hopkinton public school system. Since its inception in 1992, the HEF has promoted excellence in education in the Hopkinton Public Schools by funding $820,000 towards innovative programs requested by teachers, administrators, and other professional staff.

Recently awarded grants support a wide range of disciplines including social skills development, science, art, reading, literature, online research skills, and foreign languages. Kim Pucci, President of the HEF Board of Directors explained, “This year’s grants not only extend to multiple disciplines, but also impact instruction at all Hopkinton schools. The educational practices and ideas introduced with these grants are all innovative. Some bring new technology to enhance the understanding of current course material; others use traditional teaching fundamentals, such as books, in an original way.”

The EMC Grant for Science & Mathematics Award this year is funding the program “SMARTer Health Classes” submitted by Elmwood School Wellness Teacher, Christine Basile. The grant will fund a Smart Board for the Health Room at Elmwood School which will benefit all 518 Elmwood students. Smart Board technology brings learning alive as students interact with learning games, take virtual tours of body organs and systems and participate in data collection and graphing to learn about the cause and effect of healthy and unhealthy practices. Direct student involvement in Smart Board programs enables students to build body systems, to apply their learning to real life problems, and to see their collected data presented in charts and graphs. The excitement of open ended explorations of the heart, lungs, and circulatory systems impacts involvement and deepens understanding. The flexibility of the Smart Board enables teachers to create cross-curricular lessons with science and math as data is researched and analyzed. READ MORE...

One Confirmed Case of H1N1 - Swine - Flu in Hopkinton Schools

Letter to Parents

Dear Parents:

As of this morning, we have fifteen cases of students who are out of school sick with influenza or influenza symptoms, including one diagnosed case of H1N1. The cases are limited to Hopkins , Middle School, and High School.

The Department of Public Health (DPH) is limiting H1N1 (swine flu) testing to patients (1) with a chronic illness, (2) who are under 2 or over 65 years of age, or who are very sick. The response to H1N1 is the same as for the seasonal flu. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the DPH advise that:

“… testing and treatment [should] be focused on those with severe respiratory illness and those at highest risk of complications from influenza.   Individuals with mild illness should be advised to stay at home.  They do NOT need to be tested or treated unless they meet one of the high-risk criteria…”

DPH advises parents to keep children home for at least 7 days after flu symptoms start, or 24 hours after their symptoms go away — whichever is longer. Symptoms include a fever of 100 degrees along one or more of following: sore throat, cough, or runny nose. Please read the most recent letter to parents from the Department of Public Health for more details at: http://www.hopkinton.k12.ma.us/newweb2/pdf/swine_parent_letterMay22.pdf

We are in daily contact with our district physician, nurse leader, and public health administrator to monitor student and staff absences and to discuss directives from DPH.  As DPH sends parent update letters to us, we will forward them to you via the listserv so that you continue to be well informed.

Boating Safety Reminders From State Police

May 24, 2009 — On Friday, May 22, 2009, the Massachusetts State Police Marine Section hosted an event to educate the public on boating safety in advance of the summer boating season.

Trooper Timothy Driscoll of the Massachusetts State Police Marine Section urged boaters to be safe as they enjoy their time on the waterways of the Commonwealth this summer, and recommend the following safety tips:

·        Safety Equipment:  The State Police urge boaters to conduct a safety check on their vessel prior to getting underway to ensure that they have all the necessary safety equipment on-board.

o Personal Flotation Devices (PFD’s):  Boaters are required to have one Coast Guard approved, readily accessible, appropriately sized PFD for every passenger on-board.  Children under the age of 12 are required to wear PFD’s at all times while on deck.

o Fire Extinguishers:  Coast Guard approved fire extinguishers are required on boats where a fire hazard could exist.

o Emergency Flares:  All boats are required to carry 3 flares.

o Emergency Radio: Boaters should maintain a watch on Channel 16 and familiarize themselves with distress call procedures.

o Sound Producing Device: Boaters are required to always have access to a whistle, horn or bell in order to signal their position and intentions in periods of reduced visibility.

o Bailing Device: Boaters must always keep a manual bailing device on board for use in the event that the vessel begins to take on water.

o Propeller Safety Device: The State Police strongly recommend that all boaters install a propeller safety device to help protect passengers and swimmers from propeller strikes.

 ·        Never Boat Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs:  Impaired boating is extremely hazardous and boaters are reminded that if they are found to be boating under the influence this summer, they will be arrested and their license to operate motor vehicles in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will be suspended.

·        Obey Posted Speed and Minimal Wake Signs: Boaters are reminded to obey speed limit and wake zone signs.  Speed limits are often posted in congested waterways, but boaters are advised that during inclement weather or periods of reduced visibility, they must operate at an even slower speed appropriate for the conditions.  Additionally, minimal wake zones help assure the safety of other boaters and protect the environment.

·        Get a Vessel Safety Check and Enroll in a Boating Safety Course:  The State Police recommend that all boat owners have yearly vessel safety checks.  Having a yearly vessel safety check is one of the best ways for boat owners to discover unsafe conditions on their vessels.  The State Police also urge boaters to take a boating safety course to more thoroughly familiarize themselves with boating safety and maritime law.

Day of the Giant Hailstones

May 24, 2009 — Ruth Langh shares this photo of a handful of hail that landed all over the Hopkinton Springs neighborhood. Her lawn resembles a driving green before the cart picks up the balls.

She writes, "Our cars had dents in them, glass light posts shattered, house’s siding was damaged, screens were torn,  and trees were stripped of leaves and branches. There are others with similar damage."

Hail in Hopkinton

May 24, 2009 — Hail hit several areas of Hopkinton including Lake Whitehall and Lake Maspenock around 5:00 p.m. this evening, sending people outdoors with their cameras and camera-phones.

We thank the many people who sent photos of the large hail, but have decided to use two from Jamie Griffin (JAG Landscaping) that show the hail fairly close up, and with reference items like the size 9 flip-flop, and the broken twigs and leaves on Spring Street.

Dedication of Veterans Memorial Gazebo to be Held on  Monday, May 25, 2009

Volunteers made it happen

by Derek Dobachesky

May 24, 2009 — The Hopkinton Memorial Day celebration on Monday will culminate with a march from Mayhew St. to the town common for the dedication of a brand new gazebo, a march that is a metaphor for military procedure, as well as a group’s nearly two-year march to honor the town and its veterans as it had been done 20 years earlier.  Memorial Day Itinerary

Nearly 21 years ago, the Veterans Memorial Gazebo was dedicated on the town common. The project, which was first proposed in 1981, was spearheaded by Ernest Fecteau, who was a member of the Boston Athletic Association, treasurer of the Hopkinton War Memorial Building Fund and himself a World War II veteran. When Fecteau's daughter, Barbara Sicuso, speaks at the new Veteran's Memorial Gazebo's dedication on Monday May 25, 2009, it will end the first chapter of an effort to revitalize the town common, while maintaining important elements of its history.

“The first one was a community effort, the second one was a community effort,” Ruth Gorman, chair of Friends of the Common, said of the process behind the new gazebo's creation.

Friends of the Common, which Gorman founded in August 2007, was formed with renovation of the gazebo as its first priority. Nearly two years later, with the help of many members of the community, the Friends have achieved their first goal and more, having constructed a brand new gazebo with help from the Hopkinton Athletic Association, the Boston Athletic Association and numerous other groups and individuals throughout the community.

The new Veteran's Memorial Gazebo, glistening from top to bottom, retains not only the former's proper name, but the weathervane that rested atop it, and a granite plaque dedicating it to the memory of all veterans (Photo, above, facing east).

In addition, the front steps, as well as a octagonal centerpiece on the floor of the structure, are made from granite that was saved as the original structure was being demolished, preserving not only the traditions of the original gazebo, but formidable, tangible pieces, too.

The Friends did not set out to build a new gazebo. Initially, the organization wanted to renovate the old one, primarily by repairing its roof. However, initial appraisals showed that there were ventilation problems in the basement which had resulted in the corrosion of the electrical components; and the height of the structure would have made compliance with the Americans with Disability Act difficult and costly. The old gazebo was 48” high, and a ramp would have required one foot of ramp for every inch of rise, making a 48’ ramp a visual distraction from the beauty of the original structure. A lift would have cost an estimated $20,000, another visual distraction.

View of America

Driving, drinking, eating, shopping and more...

by Paula Venth

May 23, 2009 — I always wanted to travel to America – to the United States of America- far away from my home country- far away from Germany.

You just need to have a look over the world map and it reminds you how big America is. I would like to visit as many states as possible.

I have been living in Ashland, Massachusetts for 8 months as an au pair with an American family. I am getting used to the “American way of life.” But how different are things over here and what opinion do “non-Americans” have about the States?

The first day I came here I was amazed about how big everything was. I drove on a highway with a huge car and enjoyed the view. Now I am one of them, driving on the big roads in between a Jeep, Chrysler, pick up or a limo. I like the opportunity over here that you can get on the big roads very easily. In Germany we do not have main streets, like the Route 9, with lots of shops. But we do have the Autobahn, which is more like Route 495 or I-90. Even American people told me that they have heard something about our Autobahn, which takes people everywhere. On some parts a person can drive as fast as they want, because there is no speed limit.

It is easy to drive a car over here, because most of them have an automatic transmission, which has no need for shifting gears. Some American people, in my opinion, drive rather aggressively. Nothing can be fast enough for them– just go in between two cars, as soon as you see a tiny gap in between them, use your horn and never waste time.

If you are going to drive too fast by the way, the police are going to stop you– I am sure about that. I have seen a lot of police cars on American streets. I was amazed at the beginning, but now I got used to it. We don’t have so many police cars driving around in my home town. In Germany we have special machines, which takes a picture of fast drivers and makes them pay money.

Besides having community helpers here on the streets, like policemen, there are a lot of restaurants located all over the place. There are many fast food restaurants, like McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and Dunkin Donuts. It’s so easy to stop by, because they are all around. I don’t like unhealthy food that much, but I tried some new things here in America, that I really like. I had my first bagel, bacon and pancakes. I am going to miss those things.

There are so many opportunities over here to get unhealthy stuff — more than in Germany. You have the possibility to get whatever you want. But foreigners need to be careful with what they order. I am talking about the size! A small soda in America would be the same like an “XL” size in Germany.

It is said about America that everything is big; big cars, a big choice of everything, big fridges, even the weight of the people. I agree with first three things but I don’t like the stereotype that people think all American people are fat. Of course there are some people, who have problems with their weight, but it’s not any different in Germany.

New York Man Arrested In Connection With Shooting Death At Harvard University

CAMBRIDGE – May 21, 2009 — A New York man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with Monday’s shooting death of Justin Cosby, 21, of Cambridge, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public today.

Jabrai Jordan Copney, 20, of New York City, New York, turned himself in to authorities at the Cambridge Police Station this evening at approximately 7:10 p.m. He has been charged with murder, accessory after the fact to murder, and possession of a firearm.

Copney will be arraigned tomorrow morning in Cambridge District Court, 4040 Mystic Valley Parkway, Medford.

According to authorities, on Monday, May 18, at approximately 4:48 p.m., the Harvard University Police responded to the Kirkland House located on Dunster Street in Cambridge on reports of shots fired. Cambridge Police were also notified and responded to the scene.

Cosby, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen, had left the Kirkland House and stumbled to the intersection of Dunster Street and Mount Auburn Street. He was transported to Beth Israel Hospital and was pronounced dead early on the morning of May 19.

Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Cambridge Police, and Harvard Police began an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.

Based on that investigation, it was determined that the defendant, who is not a student at Harvard University, was visiting friends at the campus. It is alleged that the defendant, along with others, confronted Cosby in a common area inside the Kirkland House. During the course of the confrontation, multiple shots were fired. One of those shots struck Cosby, resulting in his death. It is believed that the defendant and Cosby were known to one another.

The defendant and others involved fled the scene.

This investigation is ongoing into the circumstances of the shooting as well as into other suspects who may have been involved.

The prosecutor assigned to the case is Assistant District Attorney and Senior Trial Counsel Daniel Bennett. The case is being investigated by Harvard University Police, Cambridge Police, and the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

STATEMENT FROM THE FAMILY OF
JUSTIN D. COSBY*
June 13, 1987 – May 19, 2009

May 21, 2009 — The immediate and extended family of Justin Cosby is extremely grateful for all of the love and support from friends, neighbors, childhood and college friends, and everyone that has extended support in this trying time. Justin was loved and respected by everyone that he came into contact with, as there as there are so many that have a positive story to tell when speaking of his kind heart, comical ways and loving nature. “The boy with the smile that would always lend a hand” is how so many have referred to him through the hundreds of people that have been to visit with our family over the last couple days. We are still in disbelief of the horror and shock of Justin’s murder. He was not a “hoodlum” or “gangster” - people actually laugh at the thought of him being referred to in that manner.

Justin was a fashion trendsetter, basketball player, student and self-admitted “mama’s boy”. He was looking forward to picking up new studies, furthering his aspirations to become successful and marrying his long-time girlfriend. We know that Justin’s wings will be on our shoulders to help us survive God bringing him home for bigger tasks than he can do here on Earth.

In support of the family, the Justin Cosby Memorial Fund has been established. For more information, please contact

A private wake will be held on Saturday, May 23 from 3:30 – 4:30 pm at The Concord Baptist Church at 190 Warren Avenue (at West Brookline St.) Boston, MA 02116. A private funeral service will immediately follow the wake at the same location. Justin will be buried in his hometown of Richmond, VA.

Our angel Justin will be missed and will always be in our hearts and memories.

* NOTE: Justin Cosby was shot inside the grounds of Harvard University on Monday, May 18, 2009, and died later that day at the hospital. He was not a student there.
