Isolated Incident

May 21, 2009 — This stubborn dumpster fire that was finally put out by Hopkinton Firefighters on a street near Pond Street was far enough away from the home under construction to pose no immediate threat.

Severed Pole

May 21, 2009 — A rollover shortly before 11:00 am sent the female operator to the hospital, without apparent major injuries, even though the pole was severed at the base.

      First on the scene was Legacy Farms Project Manager Steven Zeiff, assisted the woman, who was seated inside on the roof of the upside down car, in exiting her overturned vehicle. He immediately called fire and Police Departments.

      The vehicle, a new Volvo, had 480 miles on it.

Hillers Win TVL Title in 11th  Inning

Hopkinton Hillers Baseball Team won the TVL title today with a stunning 11 inning victory against Norton.  The team was tied 5-5 as Christian Lavoie had a strong pitching performance for the Hillers. 

Andrew Park pitched a scoreless 6 innings with great fielding efforts by the entire team. The winning run was produced by a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Nick Najnigler. The Hillers, under head Coach Stickney  ended their regular season with a TVL record of 15-3 . Way to go Hillers. (File photo)

Missing in America Project

May 20, 2009 — As families of deceased veterans grow older, many need a place for the ashes of those veterans, as there may not be a descendant to pass them on to. Today, Hopkinton resident Don MacNeil, who is the President of the Missing in America Project, led a group to Bourne to conduct a service and burial for the ashes of Vietnam Veteran, Attila Kupan, whose ashes had no place to go following his mother's illness.

       Mr. MacNeil's group is continuing to seek ashes of veterans whose families can no longer pass them on, or funeral homes who need to move on, in order to put them in a proper place. The MIAP has a website for those who need this valuable service. Mr. MacNeil speaks in the video above, which can also be viewed in HQ by pressing the appropriate button once it starts.

Bridging the Gap

May 20, 2009 — Elmwood School Second Grade teacher, Bridget Donahue took her class down to Golden Pond Assisted Living today to interview some of the residents there.  She have been doing this for the past several years, in an effort to bridge the generation gap and help her students realize that the “elderly” are a very important part of our community. 

Students will be working to collect information on each of the participating residents and will work to create biographical slideshows (using Microsoft Powerpoint).  They hope to visit Golden Pond again before the end of the school year to show these slideshows on the ‘big screen.’

Weston Nurseries Hires New Managers

May 20, 2009 — Weston Nurseries in Hopkinton, Massachusetts has hired Rene Fontaine to the position of Commercial Sales Manager. Rene has more than two decades of experience as a sales manager in the office supplies industry and has an impressive track record of developing sales teams, instituting new initiatives, and acquiring new customers. At Weston, Rene will be in charge of a five person sales staff that sells to landscape professionals throughout the region. Says Peter Mezitt, company President, “We are very impressed with Rene’s leadership ability and the way he works with sales people to develop their skills. Our company expects to greatly benefit from Rene’s experience in sales and marketing and his enthusiasm for Weston Nurseries.”

Melissa had a huge following of loyal customers at Lexington Gardens in Lexington, Massachusetts where she was employed for nine years.　 At Weston, Melissa is Annuals Sales Supervisor, responsible for buying in and managing the Annuals, Vegetables and Herbs as well as the Wildflowers at Weston floral department. She also manages the Custom Potting service for homeowners and retailers in the Greater Boston area.

May 20, 2009 — Rebecca Gebler is no stranger to the Hopkinton Senior Center.  Her beautiful piano notes have entertained everyone since she was a young girl.  Rebecca just finished her freshman year at the University of Utah where she is studying Piano Performance.   Last year, she held a performance at the center and everyone really enjoyed it, so it was nice to have her back again.

James, her 12-year-old brother started off the concert this afternoon by playing a couple of solos.  He did an excellent job!   Rebecca continued with selections by Brahm’s, Chopin and Beethoven.    

Rebecca has another brother, 14-year-old Philip.  All three children are home-schooled and are required by their parents to play the piano at least for five years, and then they may choose another instrument to learn.  Rebecca also plays the flute.  The whole family is musically talented and besides playing at the senior center, they have also performed for the seniors at Brampton Circle.   In fact, Ralph Edwards remembered them playing there when Rebecca was just thirteen years old and James was only seven. 

Rebecca announced that her family was moving to India tomorrow for a year.  She’ll be going along with them and will continue studying piano while they’re living abroad.

Thank you for the beautiful music today, Rebecca and James!  We wish the Gebler family the best of luck in their new venture and look forward to seeing them again when they return to Hopkinton. 

Paul Richardson, a friend of James, came along to enjoy the concert. A familiar face at the center, Paul is a member of Betty Wyckoff’s Angeline Chorus.   He’ll be joining the other kids from the chorus at the Memorial Day services where they will be reciting The Gettysburg Address.  Each of the children has memorized the Address; even the younger kids who are only five years old.  (I have to admit I only know the first couple of lines myself.) Paul gave me a mini preview and recited it for me.  He was AWESOME!   

The dinner at the Southborough Rod and Gun Club this past Saturday went very well.  I wasn’t there personally, but I’ve heard a lot of wonderful comments.   I guess the hit of the dinner was the au gratin potatoes; everyone has been raving about them!   They sounded delicious to me! 

They guys are really enjoying their new pool table!  I haven’t seen it yet, but will check it out soon and take a picture of it. 

Lots of exciting events coming up at the Senior Center, so stay tuned!

Selectmen Vote $5,000 from Marathon Fund Toward Skate Park

Selectmen Reorganize Board

May 19, 2009 — The Hopkinton Board of Selectmen met to reorganize this evening, voting unanimously to continue with Brian Herr as the Chairman following a motion by Selectman Matthew Zettek, and to vote unanimously, after a motion by Selectman RJ Dourney, to seat Mr. Zettek as the Vice-Chair (Photo below).

       Hopkinton Police Officer Philip Powers, as well as Marathon Fund Committee Chair, Carole Nathan, appeared before Selectmen with five members of the Skate Club, to request $5,000 from the Marathon Fund to repair and enlarge the Hank Fredette Skate park at EMC Park. The park is so named for former police officer and Water Superintendent Henry Fredette, who initiated the drive for the park.

       Mrs. Nathan spoke highly of the youngsters who came before her committee, calling them, "very poised." [Check out the YouTube/HopNews video by clicking on the thumbnail image]

        Mr. Herr said two of his children have learned from the older teens, and thanked them for, "teaching the younger children."

        Officer Powers said that after phase one is completed, the Police association will have a celebration and a rededication of the park to Mr. Fredette.

        But all is not perfect with the plan. Officer Powers said they need another $2,500, and the Police Association is accepting donations. To donate, call 508-497-3401 and ask for Officer Phil Powers.

A Thank You to Mary Pratt

Letter to the editor:

You may have voted for her or against her (or perhaps you're one of the majority who didn't vote at all).  You may agree or disagree with her on a range of issues.

It would be hard though to argue rationally that anybody has worked harder or worked longer for Hopkinton than Mary Pratt.

I've thanked Mary in the past for her hard work and her response was always the same.  She said it just makes no sense to thank somebody for doing what they love to do.

Mary, I know this week's election results were a tough pill to swallow, but please keep loving what you do.  Please keep doing what we should be doing for ourselves but we don't have half your energy.  In whatever capacity, official or unofficial, that is available to you, please keep watching out for our interests.

William F. Casey Jr., 81

HOPEDALE - William F. Casey Jr., 81, died Monday May 18, 2009 in Worcester.  He was the husband of the late Eileen "Daisy" (McCarthy) Casey, who died in September 2007.  Born in Maynard, he was the son of the late William F. and Ada (Carbone) Casey.  He was employed for many years as a machinist at General Electric and Fenwal of Ashland.

He is survived by his daughter Patricia Casey of Carlsbad, CA, his brother James and his wife Elizabeth of Ashland, his sisters Mary Clark of NH and Margaret Cox of IL,  and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

The funeral will be held Friday, May 22 at 9:00 a.m. from the Callanan-Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church Street, Hopkinton.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated in Holy Angels Church, Route 140, Upton at 10:00 a.m.  Burial will follow in Hopedale Village Cemetery.  Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday, May 21 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.

May 18, 2009 — In an election season with little controversy, Todd Cestari, an unenrolled candidate and Michelle Gates, a Republican, unseated three-term incumbent Selectman Mary Pratt with 2,276 people voting.

         The only contest besides the Selectmen's race was the controversial Question 1, which determined a wording change in the Community Preservation funding that deleted the word "passive" in the allocation of recreational funding, and now allows the addition of active recreation.

         The Selectmen winning vote totals coincide pretty much with the winning vote tally for Question 1, something that Mrs. Pratt supporters would have been expected to vote against.

         There were 739 blanks for Selectmen, an indication that one or more candidates suggested "bulleting" the vote. That means in a contest with two open seats, people vote for just one candidate, so as to not add votes to either opponent.

 HopNews will upload a video of interviews with the winning candidates later this evening.

Boulder Wins HopNews Poll

We asked HopNews readers to weigh in following the news that Boulder Capital would like to postpone their Master Plan Special  Permit with the Planning Board, the last major step before planning development of the individual pods.

The unfortunate circumstances of the credit crunch has put the ownership of the land possibly into jeopardy. A majority of HopNews readers would like to see Boulder Capital continue with its ownership.

May 18, 2009 — There was no traffic jam at the Middle School this afternoon, as the turnout at the polls, according to all of the sign-holders, has been below normal. We've got one more video processing that was shot this afternoon at the driveway. Then, we'll be there at the election, following the closing of the polls.

Boston Motor Vehicle Stop Leads to Arrest of Franklin Man for Weapons

May 18, 2009 — Massachusetts State Police have charged a Franklin man with numerous weapon charges after stopping him for numerous motor vehicle violations early this morning and finding a M11 9mm sub machine gun.

Today at approximately 12:45 a.m., Sergeant William Nasuti stopped a  2003 Mitsubishi Gallant for  speeding on Geneva Ave in Boston. When the Sergeant exited his cruiser, the operator fled at a high rate.

During this time the vehicle slowed and the front seat passenger exited the vehicle with what appeared to be a gun in his hand. The vehicle then came to a stop on Elm Hill Park. The rear seat passenger fled with what appeared to be a gun in his hand, and the operator also fled. Sergeant Nasuti was able to subdue the operator and placed him under arrest. When he returned to the vehicle he observed a M11 machine gun in the vehicle.

The operator, 22-year-old JAMES L. CROMARTIE has been charged with being a felon in possession  of a firearm, being a felon in possession of a large capacity firearm, possession of a firearm without a license, improperly storing a large capacity weapon, leaving a firearm in a vehicle, and numerous motor vehicle charges. He will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court this morning.
