Selectmen Make Warrant Recommendations
April 21, 2009 — Above, Hopkinton Marathon Committee Chair, Dorothy Ferriter, spoke to the Selectmen Tuesday evening on behalf of the appointment of Alex Danahy to the Committee. Ms. Ferriter said, "Alex has been working with us on the Wheelchair Division. I would be honored to have him on the Committee." Ms. Ferriter said that Alex has been volunteering with the Committee in an unofficial capacity for five years. "I've enjoyed the last five years and have gotten a lot of tips from the athletes," he said. Members of the Board voted unanimously in favor of the appointment. The Dynasty Restaurant received the unanimous blessing of the four Selectmen in attendance to transfer the license and management to Rosie Li Ang, who has been managing it for about a year. The restaurant has added sushi, and would like to offer karaoke. Hopkinton Chief of Police Thomas Irvin said there was nothing out of the ordinary with his department's dealings with the restaurant. DPW Director JT Gaucher was on hand to see the Selectmen give the nod to several of his Town Meeting Articles, among them the Wood Street Pump Station, rehabilitation of the West main Street Water Tank and the Spring Street Drainage issue. But they voted three to one in favor of not recommending to the Town Meeting members a Town Charter change that would make clear the creation of the Board of Public Works and define its duties. The change would take away the right of the Town Manager to hire the Director of Public Works, and to oversee the Department of Public Works, a power Town Counsel Ray Miyares has defined as being held by the Town Manager. The BPW was established the same year that the the Town passed the Charter, but by a different process, an act of the legislature that had begun in 1998, updated in 2006, and sponsored by attorney Tom Nealon. The Board members gave no reason for their decision. Selectmen gave the thumbs up on most Articles, but did not act on several Fruit Street related Articles because Selectmen Mary Pratt and Michael Shepard are on the abutters list, and Selectmen RJ Dourney was absent, leaving only two voting members, Brian Herr and Matthew Zettek. They must have three voting members to vote an issue. They will meet next week and address those issues as well as some others for which they need more information. |

Hopkinton Pursuit Ends in Rollover in Milford Officer backs off when speeds hit 80 mph
April 20, 2009 — A vehicle failed to stop for Officer Matthew McNeil on Hayden Rowe Street after Officer McNeil allegedly witnessed it hit a curb and activated his blue lights. The vehicle sped up, turned down Chestnut street, and accelerated to speeds of up to 80 mph, fleeing into Holliston. Due to the fleeing suspect driving in the opposite lane at times, Officer McNeil backed off and put some room between his vehicle and the vehicle vehicle he was pursuing, which was occupied only by the driver. The vehicle made a turn that brought him to Route 16 in Holliston, and then headed west and into Milford. It took a left onto Beaver Street, where it crashed across from Burger King. Milford and Holliston police joined in the pursuit, as did the Massachusetts State Police air wing, which sent a chopper to fly over the scene. According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the vehicle struck another vehicle, slid into a curb, and flipped over. The other vehicle was occupied by the driver, a lone woman who was uninjured, whose husband arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. The suspect was removed from the vehicle at gunpoint. The suspect, who was bleeding from the face, was placed on a backboard, fitted with a neck brace and chrome handcuffs, and transported to Milford Hospital by Milford Ambulance, accompanied by officer McNeil. |

Ethiopian Wins Boston Marathon Men's Division

New British Documentary Being Filmed Locally
April 18, 2009 — Former TV reporter, now British television producer, Andy Webb, is developing a documentary about the Entwistle murders for MentornMedia, a British production company that supplies films not only to Britain, but to several international markets.
He was in Hopkinton on Friday and stopped by the HopNews studio for a video interview, right, during which he speaks of the crime, the differences between the British and American court systems, the lack of a motive, and more. EMC/Respite Center Have Bash Several EMC runners to race to support Respite Center
April 18, 2009 — Above, Dorothy Ferriter, Chair of the Hopkinton Marathon Committee and Dale Danahy of Colella's, chat during the Michael Lisnow Respite Center's annual get together with the runners from EMC. The event has become so popular, that it has become too big to hold at the Center's facility, so this year, EMC hosted it. April 17, 2009 — It has been 2,500 years in the making, but big things are being planned for next year when Marathon, Greece celebrates the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, where the Athenians turned away a Persian army ten times its size. A Greek soldier, Phedippedes, ran 26 miles, 385 yards from Marathon to Athens to warn of the coming Persians and to announce the victory over them in Marathon. He had just finished running an even longer, and so died from exhaustion upon reaching Athens. Center School Kids Are in Good Hands
April 17, 2009 — This morning at around 7:30, Center School smoke alarms went off, according to Fire Lt. William Lukey, due to smoke from a transformer in a ceiling heater motor. There were no children in the building at that time. Units from Hopkinton and Ashland Fire responded and identified the problem, an overheated classroom ventilator. The room where the isolated incident took place was purged of the smoke and air, which happened before any of the children were in the building. Fire apparatus returned because the adults who were there complained of symptoms of nausea and headaches from the earlier exposure and the lingering odor. Four adults were taken to the hospital for further evaluation,and four signed waivers after being examined by firefighters. |

He was born in Natick, MA on March 7, 1930 and was raised in Ashland, MA and lived there for 55 years before moving to Gloucester, MA in 1985. He signed a contract with the Boston Braves Baseball Organization in 1948 while a Senior in High School. After graduation he played on the Braves Farm team until 1950 when he joined the Navy and served for the next 4 years, returning to the Braves Organization after his discharge from the Navy.
Eddie also served as a Selectman in Ashland for 6 years. He worked for many years at Ashland Lumber Company and later for Whitman and Howard Architectural Engineers in Wellesley. |

Unexpected Expenses Increase School Budget

April 17, 2009 — The Hopkinton School Committee continued its ongoing
budget process, recognized the achievements of student artists and
musicians and greeted visitors from its Sister City of Marathon, Greece
at its regular meeting on April 16, 2009 (File photo).
The fiscal year 2010 budget was complicated by new, unforeseen special
education costs. Four new students will be entering the special
education program in Hopkinton Public Schools, whom the Committee
believes will cost it $182,000 due to legally-mandated one-on-one
instruction. As a result of this and the anticipation of further changes
to the budget proposal, the Committee voted to delay presenting an
updated budget request to the Board of Selectman until after presenting
the information of these expenses to Board members, possibly until the
town meeting on May 4.
"Maybe we're just chasing our tail on this," Committee Vice Chair Phil
Totino said of attempting to present a finalized budget to individual
members of the Board on a planned working session the morning of Friday,
April 17.
Committee Chair Nancy Alvarez Burdick spoke to members of the public
interested in the budget, "People need to be paying attention" to the
ongoing process.
The Committee recognized 23 Hopkinton Public Schools students who
received awards in the 2009 Scholastic Art Awards, which featured over
5,000 entries from across the state. Hopkinton students won 8 Gold Keys,
8 Silver Keys and 9 Honorable
The Committee also recognized Hopkinton student-musicians who
participated in the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors
Association Concert and Choral Festival on April 3. Hopkinton
instrumental groups took home took home six prizes, including the high
school concert band's gold medal, as well as three silver and two bronze
medals.
The Committee approved two items of new business. Middle School
principal John Lynch presented his changed to the program of studies,
foremost of which is the division of eighth grade gym classes into three
term-long elective programs: competitive team sports, individual/team
life-long sports and life-long physical activity. These are designed to
cater to students with different types of preferences for physical
activities. The Committee quickly approved Lynch's changes.
The Committee also approved the release of funds to Charter Brothers
Construction for the third of four payments for construction of the
Bleacher Grandstand/Press Box Project at the high school. The Project,
which is currently 95 percent complete, is currently $17,753 over budget
due to the relocation of underground utilities, such as electrical
wiring and water pipes, and the removal of underground ledges. The
utilities were not documented and the ledges were not detected in a soil
exploration survey prior to construction. Both required extra labor and
equipment. The latest payment is for $81,356.50, leaving $4,500 to be
paid for guard rail and fence installation, as well as athletic field
and lawn restoration.
After addressing those items, the Committee entered a short executive
session to discuss non-unit personnel salaries. After the executive
session, the Committee entered a working session on the FY10 budget and
the Strategic Plan, which was opened to the public, before re-entering
its normal meeting for items by consensus.
The Committee voted by consensus to approve the minutes from three prior
meetings, as well as accept donations of $969,000 from Hannaford's for
the Middle School, a Wii gaming system for therapists at the Elmwood
School, and $1,00 from the "Funding Factory" for the Elmwood School Gift
Account. The Committee adjourned at 11:28 p.m. It meets again on April 30 at 7:30 in the Middle School library for a regular meeting, and then from May 4-6 in the library for the Annual Town Meeting. |

April 17, 2009 — Interesting things about the female red-winged blackbird are, that unlike the male, it has no red on its wing — nor is it black. The bird stayed on the periphery of the pond that it claimed as its territory, as did the beaver that made it. Taken on Thursday over a beaver pond off of South Mill Street with a near 500mm lens. |

Anne
Taylor McGary Hubler ,79, passed away at her home on Monday,
April 13, 2009 in Hopkinton, MA. Anne was born on October 6, 1929 in
Dayton, Ohio to Walter and Mary McGary. Until the final 1 ˝ years of her
life,
Two
visitors from Hopkinton's "Sister City," Marathon, Greece, addressed the
Committee. Dmitri Kyriakides (File photo), grandson of Stylianos
Kyriakides, winner of the 1946 Boston Marathon, and developer whose
company is creating a historical-theme educational amusement park in
Marathon, Greece. Kyriakides attended Adopt-A-Marathoner events at the
Elmwood Elementary School the morning of April 16, in which elite Kenyan
runners spoke with students. Kyriakides also spoke with Latin, Ancient
Greece and history students in the high school the same day. "It's been
a great day for us here," he said. Kyriakides will also speak to Middle
School students on Friday, April 17.

17, 2009 — The Hopkinton Sustainable Green Committee will have a table
on Marathon day (April 20th). The HSGC will have sign up sheets so
residents can show their support for a CSA (Community Sponsored
Agriculture).
