Education Foundation (HEF) Annual Winter Gala, held at the Lake View
Pavilion in

Reach For The Stars: Supporting Excellence in Education, was attended by

guests who enjoyed an elegant evening
of dinner, dancing, and a game room with blackjack and Texas Hold ‘em
tables in a beautiful setting.
The highlight of the evening was the live auction in which local radio talk show host, Michael Graham, of 96.9 WTKK, served as auctioneer for the evening. Graham entertained the guests by comically prodding them to up the ante for ten deluxe items, including weekend getaways to the Ritz-Carlton Hotels in Boston, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, and tickets to Red Sox /Yankees, Bruins/Anaheim games, and 4 Patriots Clubhouse seats. According to HEF president, Kim Pucci “The Winter Gala is the HEF’s largest fundraiser each year. We are thrilled, especially in this economy, to be able to raise so much money to give to the schools in the form of grants for new curricular initiatives. The Hopkinton Education Foundation is a volunteer, non-profit corporation dedicated to providing grants to teachers that demonstrate educational innovation while supporting the goals and curriculum of the Hopkinton public schools. Through fundraising events, such as the Annual Winter Gala, and the generous donations of the Hopkinton community, the HEF continues to foster high-quality programs affecting all grade levels and all educational disciplines. MELROSE Coach Arrested, Arraigned On Child Rape Charges
James Conner, 51, of “We allege that this defendant, over the course of a number of years, violated the trust placed in him as a coach of young girls and sexually assaulted this young victim,” District Attorney Leone said. “We continue to investigate whether any additional crimes may have been committed against this or any other victim.” “The Melrose Police Department, in conjunction with the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, is investigating alleged sexual misconduct by Assistant Director James Conner of the Melrose YMCA’s After School Program,” Melrose Police Chief Michael Lyle said. “This investigation is ongoing. Because of the way that the suspect operated, our investigators are concerned that there could be additional victims who have not yet come forward,” North Reading Police Chief Edward W. Nolan said. In addition to his role as Assistant Director of the after-school program, Conner was also a girls basketball coach at the YMCA.

February 12, 2009 — Many veteran Hopkinton politicians call the election season, Silly Season, because of the intensity that can accompany some elections, and the change that accompanies some who run. Nonetheless we do not repeat the phrase here to demean those who serve, but to put into perspective the passions that may rise to the top of conversations until May 18, 2009. It is not to diminish the value of public service or the need for qualified leaders, especially in these times, but to define the upcoming season.

Savann Leng, 21, was found guilty of first degree murder by a Lowell Superior Court Jury. Lowell Superior Court Judge McIntyre sentenced Leng to life in prison without eligibility for parole.
“We thank the jury for returning this just verdict," District Attorney Leone said. "This was another tragic example of people resorting to the use of weapons to resolve conflict. I want to commend the prosecution team as well as Lowell Police and the Massachusetts State Police for their work on this case. This case had several legal challenges that were overcome on behalf of the victim and those who cared for him.”

Crosswalk Enforcement
February 12, 2009 — Officer Stephen Buckley returns to his cruiser, papers in hand, after stopping a vehicle while engaged in crosswalk enforcement at Church and Main Streets. The law, as stated on the state legislature's website, is as follows:
PART I. ADMINISTRATION OF THE GOVERNMENT TITLE XIV. PUBLIC WAYS AND WORKS CHAPTER 89. LAW OF THE ROAD Chapter 89: Section 11. Marked crosswalks; yielding right of way to pedestrians; penalty Section 11. When traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right of way, slowing down or stopping if need be so to yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk marked in accordance with standards established by the department of highways if the pedestrian is on that half of the traveled part of the way on which the vehicle is traveling or if the pedestrian approaches from the opposite half of the traveled part of the way to within 10 feet of that half of the traveled part of the way on which said vehicle is traveling.
No driver of a vehicle shall pass any other vehicle which has stopped at a marked crosswalk to permit a pedestrian to cross, nor shall any such operator enter a marked crosswalk while a pedestrian is crossing or until there is a sufficient space beyond the crosswalk to accommodate the vehicle he is operating, notwithstanding that a traffic control signal may indicate that vehicles may proceed.
Whoever violates any provision of this section shall be punished by a fine of not more than $200. Whenever a pedestrian is injured by a motor vehicle in a marked crosswalk, the department of state police or the municipal police department with jurisdiction of the street, in consultation with department of state police if deemed appropriate, shall conduct an investigation into the cause of the injury and any violation of this section or other law or ordinance and shall issue the appropriate civil or criminal citation or file an application for the appropriate criminal complaint, if any. This section shall not limit the ability of a district attorney or the attorney general to seek an indictment in connection with the operation of a motor vehicle which causes injury or death and which violates this section.

Men Arraigned In Connection With Medford Bank Robbery
Somerville District Court Judge Sabita Singh ordered both defendants held pending a dangerousness hearing, scheduled for February 17.
According to authorities, at approximately
12:14 pm yesterday, two armed
and masked males entered the East Cambridge Savings Bank at Medford Police were dispatched and, in route, spotted the defendants fleeing the scene in the stolen vehicle. A Medford Police Officer attempted to pull over the defendants but the defendants accelerated the vehicle and led police on a brief police chase before crashing into a Medford Police Officer’s police cruiser, head on. The defendants were placed in custody and transported to the hospital for injuries, along with the officer involved in the crash. The stolen money, as well as two knives were recovered from the stolen Jeep Cherokee. |

February 11, 2009 — Ten Hopkinton High Seniors volunteered recently for Habitat for Humanity in the bitter cold. They worked hard installing doors and windows in a Sudbury Habitat home and had great fun despite the bone chilling cold.
The volunteers were: Michelle Berton, Sean Donahue, Lauren Dunne, Andrew Fabricant, Greg Hadley, Erin Mahoney, James Paras. Town Manager Search Narrowing Down Town wants to beat Westborough to most qualified candidate
by Robert Falcione February 10, 2009 — In an abbreviated session, the Board of Selectmen, short Chairman Brian Herr, who was on an airplane somewhere over the United States at that time, and Michael Shepard, who had duties with the Town of Brookline where he works, heard an update from Director of Human resources, Maryrose DeGroot, on the progress of the search for a new Hopkinton Town Manager. Ms. DeGroot said that from a field of sixty applicants, twenty-two made the first round, and nine are left following the most recent cut. She said that she would like to bring three to five applicants before the Board of Selectmen for interviews. "We will give you a complete dossier of each candidate by March 10," she said, adding that it would include reference checks, and education verification. After hearing that the board might consider two evenings of interviews, Interim Town Manager Clayton Carlisle recommended that the board complete the process in one meeting.
"Let's not let Westborough get the best candidate before us," said selectman RJ Dourney. Westborough is also seeking to hire a town manager. "They are farther along in the process," said Selectman Matthew Zettek. When asked how the field of candidates looked, Ms. DeGroot said, "I am grateful I don't have to choose. You will be very happy with the quality of the field." She also promised to try to move the date up, as Mr. Dourney requested. Mr. Carlisle said that the budget working session the Selectmen held last Saturday was very helpful to him. In turn, Mr. Dourney said it was the most productive meeting he has attended. Mr. Zettek, added that Mr. Carlyle's financial acumen was key.
"No one is trying to cut anything at the schools," said Vice-Chair Mary Pratt, acting as Chair.

Planning Board Continues Hearing on Legacy Impacts No decision on intersection options

The initial phase of intersection improvement involves the installation of modern signals that respond directly to the needs of traffic, and are slated to be installed early this year.
The final phase of the
intersection improvement shows the taking of 11 parking spaces from Main
Street to accommodate additional lanes approaching the intersection from
the east and the west. However, the group did not present a
Dale Danahy (photo), President of Colella's Supermarket, said that she was on the Downtown Revitalization Committee for three years "And now you are eliminating 11 spaces?" she said. The meeting was held in the Fire Station Meeting Room. "Who parked in Colella's parking lot tonight?" Mrs. Danahy asked, looking at the members of the Planning Board. Several hands went up.
Mr. Nagi, in answer to another question, said that the designs have taken into account the input from the community, as expressed by Town Counsel Raymond Miyares, that the people in the town want to protect the community's character. "I would ask what level of improvement is acceptable to you," he said. However, board member Ken Weismantel, again mentioning that the Town Counsel is not a an engineer as he did at a previous meeting, suggested taking the spaces from Colella's parking lot on the Grove Street side to "straighten out the intersection." "You are talking about 22 spaces," said Mrs. Danahy. As it is, the current plan calls for widening Grove Street by around 6 feet, 2.5 of which would be a taking of Colella's land. Planning Board member Sandy Altamura said, "What I keep hearing is the level of frustration over the intersection." Mrs. Altamura questioned the intricate planning and adding of lanes because the intersection at Wood and Main was not included in the plans. "You'll be coming to a complete stop 200 feet down the road," she said. The board has continued the Public Hearing until 8:00 pm on March 9, 2009. |

Born in White Plains, NY; she was the daughter of the late Vincent and Beatrice (Coons) MacIntosh, and wife of Jon Thomas Sharp. They were married 17 years. Mary Ellen was the wife of the late Alfred Reinertson, who died in 1982. A
longtime resident of Hopkinton, she moved to Milford in 2005. Mrs. Sharp

Examples of technology grants in recent years include interactive whiteboards for the Middle School and Hopkins School, digital audio media and assistive technologies throughout the district libraries, and software and servers to establish a virtual library providing students and staff with access to district-wide resources.
Other grants have broadened and strengthened students’ exposure to the arts, including the introduction of new musical equipment and instruments to Center School, a pottery kiln to Elmwood School, and jazz improvisation and digital art electives at the High School. |

As part of his Eagle Scout Leadership project, James led a group of volunteers planning, designing and planting a perennial fruit garden at the Hopkinton Senior Center. His first choice following graduation in May will be to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. For his Eagle Scout Leadership project, Edward built a garden with a patio, birdbath and benches at the Hopkinton Serenity House, a task that involved 258 man hours, of which he spent more than a quarter of the time himself. After graduation, Edward plans to spend a year in Scotland before entering college. |
