January 20, 2009 — Two vehicles collided early last evening at the town's main intersection, sending one person to the hospital.

What's Wrong?

January 20, 2009 — The young female driver had no idea why she was told she is not supposed to drive on the wrong side of the road, and then park facing in the wrong direction. Above, she is leaving a space near Town Hall, facing eastbound in the westbound lane. If she is your daughter, please explain a little better than this writer did, because she didn't want to move until faced with a call to the police. And as a sort of double-scoop, there is a truck in the background wrongly entering a one-way on the side of the bank, which was unnoticed at the time of the photo.

I am hoping that you can post a ‘lost stuffed animal’ notice in HopNews I am attaching a picture of it

My son, Ben lost his stuffed animal named “Ice Bat” in the Hopkinton Drug or Colella’s parking lots – at least we think so. No one returned it to either store, so we are hoping that someone picked it up.

It isn’t just any stuffed animal – Ben is really attached to it. He got it when he was in the hospital recently and it gave him great comfort.

HOPKINTON GIRLS TRACK TEAM DEFEATS MEDFIELD

Westwood is next

The Hopkinton Girls track team took on the undefeated Medfield team this past Saturday at the High School. The Hopkinton Girls had a fabulous meet and ending up winning 57 to 29. Many of the girls had personal best performances.

Cecily Boyce led the team in scoring placing 1^st in the Hurdles (6.7), 1^st in the 300 meters (43.8) and 1^st in the high jump (5’2”). Kelly O’Connor (7.5) captured 3^rd in the hurdles for Hopkinton. In the dash, Molly Morningstar (6.0), photo, placed 1^st and Sheena DuPuy (6.3) took 3^rd place. Kellie Lodge (12.22.7) and Erica Normandeau (12.44.6) took 1^st and 3^rd place in the 2 mile.

Kim Bolick (1:48.4) placed 2^nd in the 600 meter race by .3 seconds and Katrina Parsons (2:07.5) grabbed third place. Molly Morningstar (45.3) scored again in the 300 meter race capturing 2^nd place for Hopkinton. Freshman Jennifer Lynds (4’10”) had a great jump to capture 3^rd place in the high jump. Brianna Roche (3:22.0) and Jaclyn Perrault (3:23.8) successfully claimed 2^nd and 3^rd place in the 1000 meters.

Hopkinton swept the mile with the trio of Lauren Shultz (5:40.2), Tamara Mills (5:47.3) and Becca Govanni (5:56.3). In the shot put, Maggie Olney threw 27’9” for 2^nd place. Finally the Hopkinton girls won the 4x4 relay beating Medfield by .3 seconds with a time of 4:28.4. The team consisted of Jenn Lynds, Emily Jarvis, Kim Bolick and Kellie Lodge. As always the relay was tremendously exciting to watch.

The girls take on Westwood this coming Wednesday for the last meet of the regular TVL season. If they beat Westwood they will win the TVL title for the third year in a row. Please come and cheer them on at 3:30 at the High School Track.

Man Charged With Murder In Connection With Saturday’s Somerville Homicide
Defendant Is Also Charged With Assault Of Second Victim

SOMERVILLE – A Cambridge man has now been charged with the murder of one victim, and assault of another, in connection with a stabbing incident that occurred on Saturday in Somerville, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone and Somerville Police Chief Anthony Holloway informed the public today.

Joseph Palmisano, 20, of Cambridge, has been charged with one count of first degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of Romeo Murray, 17, of Malden. Palmisano is also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and armed assault with intent to murder in connection with the stabbing of the surviving victim in the incident.

According to authorities, at approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, Somerville Police responded to reports of a stabbing at the La Quinta Inn at 23 Cummings Street in Somerville. When police arrived, they found two victims suffering from apparent stab wounds.

The victims were transported to a Boston hospital. Murray was pronounced dead at the hospital. The second victim was treated and has since been released from the hospital.

Somerville Police and State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
Later on Saturday morning, police arrested Palmisano and charged him with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon relating to the stabbing of the surviving victim. Police continued to investigate the circumstances of the stabbings, and that investigation resulted in the murder charge against Palmisano in connection with the death of Murray.

The stabbings both occurred inside the hotel. It is believed to have been an isolated incident and the defendant and victims were known to each other.

Palmisano will be arraigned on Tuesday morning in Somerville District Court.
These charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The case is being investigated by Somerville Police and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

The large TV was donated by resident Tony Rizzo, and the Wii system was donated by Town employee Pat Lynch. The seniors did very well on their own, but were receptive to advice from the students, who were there for the MLK event.

Hopkinton will join thousands of communities across the country in a national day of service, to promote enthusiasm for community service in youth (and the rest of us). Last year, almost 500 people participated in Hopkinton.

9am to noon

Hopkinton Middle School

9:00: Breakfast. Coffee, hot chocolate, bagels, muffins and donuts.

9:30: Speakers and Performances. There will be a half hour program featuring a dynamic speaker, powerful video clips of Dr. King and an acapella performance by Enter Stage Left.

10:00 to noon: Community service projects led by middle and high school groups. Making fleece blankets, knitting afghans, making friendship bracelets for homeless kids and writingletters to soldiers, are just a few examples.

In addition:

Middle school aged youth and younger need adult supervision. Our focus is on youth from 4th to 12th grades and adults/senior citizens in our community. We realize that younger kids may be there with their families and that is fine.

There is a children's book drive (new or gently used) with collection boxes at the library, schools and St. John's/ First Congregational Churches religious education offices. The books will be delivered to family shelters. You may also bring the books with you on MLK Day, along with blankets/towels for the animal shelters, canned goods, yarn and returnable aluminum cans.

Some youth groups will be attending the breakfast and then going out in the community to participate in service projects previously set up at the fire station, the library, the senior center and Golden Pond. Three groups of teens will be helping to build houses for Habitat for Humanity with in the next month.

Additional $1.1 Billion Shortfall

Rep. Dykema suggests regionalization

January 16, 2009 — According to State Representative, Carolyn Dykema, Governor Deval Patrick announced yesterday an additional projected shortfall of $1.1 billion below projected budget revenues. In October, Governor Patrick realized a $1.4 billion shortfall and made cuts to the FY’09 budget. Those cuts spared local aid. But things may be different this time around, said Ms. Dykema.

“Time is of the essence,” she said in a short interview this morning.

“The Governor asked for the authority to consider cuts to local aid.” Ms. Dykema said the legislature gave the Governor the authority to address local aid in the budget shortfall, but only for this year. “He said he would minimize local aid impacts the best he can,” she said.

“We have to think of opportunities. We have to look at regionalization; public safety and schools, as well as telecommunications to close the loopholes,” she said. Communications companies have not been paying property taxes on their poles, but towns, including Hopkinton have filed suit to change that.

January 16, 2009 — The Fire department got a call this morning from the Dynasty restaurant prior to their opening that there was an odor of gas in the building. Firefighters on scene got no readings, and determined it was not natural gas.

"Someone walked in with some diesel fuel on their shoes, and unfortunately, got some on the rug, said Hopkinton Fire department Lt. William Miller.

"That's all. Nice and simple," he said.

Detainees Released

January 15, 2009 — Hopkinton Police stopped a vehicle on South Street during rush hour and detained its operator and two passengers after they received information that the vehicle was stolen. Following a short investigation, the men were released without being charged.

Steep Decline Predicted for Nonresidential Construction Activity in 2009

Commercial sector to be hardest hit; lower building materials costs

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the overall U.S. economy continues to struggle, nonresidential construction spending is expected to decrease by 11 percent in 2009 in inflation adjusted terms. Commercial projects including office buildings and retail establishments will see the most significant decrease in activity. On the positive side, prices have dropped for key construction commodities. These are highlights from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) semi-annual Consensus Construction Forecast, a survey of the nation's leading construction forecasters.

"As profits for businesses have fallen and the ability to get credit to finance projects has become far more difficult, construction plans have been put on hold or canceled outright in recent months," said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. "This is not expected to turn around anytime soon and it's likely to get worse before it gets better."

Hopkinton sends Crews to Norfolk to Assist in Search

January 14, 2009 — Five Hopkinton Firefighters, as well as Deputy Chief Ken Clark, have joined Norfolk public safety officials in the search for a missing man, 37 year-old Christopher Bigsby, in the Charles River behind the Norfolk Ice Rink.

Bixby is described as 5'10" with brown hair and blue eyes and is wearing a shirt with a firefighting logo on it.

According to Lt. Carl Harris, the Hopkinton Firefighters are part of a Dive Support Team. In addition, Lt. Harris said a lighting unit is staged nearby in Millis in case it is needed. File Photo. NEW! Channel 7 report.

FRAMINGHAM Dennis R. Smith, 65, of Framingham, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, after a long illness. Born in Framingham, son of the late Edwin R. and Regina (Cudak) Smith, he was a lifelong resident of Framingham. He was a graduate of Framingham South High School, and was a dispatcher for more than 40 years in the family business, Smittys Towing Service in Framingham. He was a member of the Framingham Lodge of Elks B.P.O.E. #1264 and a longtime member of the Woodville Rod and Gun Club, where he served as president for more than10 years.

January 14, 2009 — The United States Census Bureau is seeking people to help out with its 2010 Census.

"We need local residents to fill all sorts of positions for the 2010 Census," US Census Bureau Recruiting Assistant Rock Figueroa said.

"We need to fill supervisory and management positions, as well as clerical, office, personnel and enumerators (People who go door-to-door)". He said that people will try to be matched with areas near their homes.

Fallen Army Major Always Wanted to be a Soldier

January 14, 2009 — According to a story in the Boston Globe today, Army Major Brian M. Mescall, the former Hopkinton resident killed in Afghanistan by an IED along with two other soldiers, fulfilled a life-long dream by joining the Army.

The news organization located his wife, Korean native Chi-un Mescall, at their home Alabama, where she still resides with her six year-old son. She recounted his love of cooking and his cheerful disposition.

The paper also details Major Mescall's educational history, which included Framingham State College.

“Junior Hiller Night” will be held at the January 17^thhome game against Dover/Sherborn at Navin Ice Rink.

Students wearing their Demons or Middle School Jerseys will be given free admission. Players will be invited after the game for refreshments and meet with coaches and captains to learn what it takes to be a Hiller.

State Police Host AMBER Alert Awareness Day Child Safety Fair

January 13, 2009 — Today the Massachusetts State Police hosted its 2^nd Annual National AMBER Alert Awareness Day Child Safety Fair at The Hall at Patriot Place in Foxborough, in observance of the 12^th Annual National AMBER Alert Awareness Day.

National AMBER Alert Day honors the memory of Amber Hagerman, a nine-year-old girl who was abducted and murdered in Arlington, Texas on January 13, 1996. The AMBER Alert system activates an urgent bulletin in the most serious child abduction cases in an attempt to galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and safe recovery of the child. The AMBER Alert program has proven to represent the best hope for the safe recovery of abducted children and to date is responsible for or has assisted in the recovery of over 400 children nationwide. In the six years since the AMBER Alert program’s inception in Massachusetts, there have been 14 AMBER Alert activations seeking a total of 22 abducted children. The program has ensured the safe recovery of all of these children. The success of the AMBER Alert program sends a strong message that crime against our children is grossly unacceptable and that as a society, we will work together to track down perpetrators who prey on children and safely recover the children they intend to harm.

New England Patriots Cheerleaders and “Pat Patriot,” the New England Patriots’ mascot, were on hand to meet the children.

Lauren Westman of Sharon had an identification kit made for her 3-month-old son Nathan because “the hospital where I gave birth did not take any foot or fingerprints of Nathan when he was born, and I wanted to ensure that I had some means to positively identify him.”

Christine MacLaughlin of North Attleboro had identification kits prepared for her three children: 5-year-old Jack, 23-month-old Leah, and one-month-old Sarah. Christine said that she came to the fair today because, “having a child abducted is every mom’s biggest fear, so I wanted to be able to provide as much information as possible to the police so precious moments aren’t lost if the unthinkable happens.”

Giving Back is Back Again!

January 5, 2009 — Hopkinton’s Second Annual Day of Giving Back is almost here! Please join community, church and school groups on Martin Luther King Day for a morning of community service and celebration. In anticipation, please consider donating one or more of the following items:

New or gently used children's books. If you would like to drop off in advance, boxes will be at all Hopkinton schools, Hopkinton Library and St John's Religious Education Office and the First Congregational Church. Books can also be brought to the Middle School on MLK Day. Other items to bring to middle school on January 19th.

• Laundry detergent for the Respite Center and Project Just Because
• Canned goods for Project Just Because/Hopkinton Food Pantry
• Towels/blankets for the Friends of Greyhounds & Baypath Humane Society
• Aluminum cans for recycling

The Day of Giving Back takes place on Jan.19 at 9:00am at the Middle School. New this year is a Blood Drive at the Middle School (10am to 3pm) ages 17 and up. “Basic Rights” Workshop for Special Education January 28

　

January 13, 2009 – It’s not easy for parents of special needs children to navigate their way in the sometimes confusing world of special education. Who is eligible for special education? What are their rights? How can they make sure these rights are being addressed?

To answer these questions and more, the Hopkinton, Holliston and Ashland PACs (Parent Advisory Council), will be hosting a Basic Rights workshop on Wednesday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m. at the Robert Adams Middle School in Holliston. Presented by the Federation for Children, this workshop will give families an introduction to their rights and responsibilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Massachusetts Special Education Law, and No Child Left Behind. It is designed to teach parents how to be effective partners with the school, decide the child’s eligibility for special education, and plan, make decisions and monitor the educations process of their children.

Based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, SPEAC is made up of parents and guardians working to ensure all children with special needs are educated effectively. Ella L. Tedstone, 87

CLEARWATER, FLA. Ella L. Tedstone, 87, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Hopkinton, MA and Warner, NH, entered into rest peacefully Wednesday, Jan 7, 2009. She is survived by her son, Lawrence and his wife Susan of Clearwater, FL, Grandchildren Bret Spinnazolla of Ashland, MA, Brendan Tedstone and his wife Tina, and Luke Tedstone and his wife Jennifer, both of Hopkinton, MA; Step grandchildren, Michael Petrasko and Tammy Davidson of Wareham, MA; great grandchildren, Luke Jr., Nicole and Ella; step great grandchild, Christopher; sister-in-law, Jessie Hannold; brother-in-law, Gilbert Tedstone; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward “Ted” Tedstone, daughter, Lynn Spinnazolla and grandson Todd Spinnazolla.

She was a WAC veteran of World War II, employed in the food industry for many years, and an active member at United Methodist Church in Contoocook, N.H. She was also a member of the Golden Girls and loved to spend time with her family and friends. Graveside services will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Wayland at a later date.

It was with extreme sadness that the Board of Selectmen heard of the death of Major Brian Mescall during combat operations in Afghanistan while serving in “Operation Enduring Freedom.” Brian, with his family, lived on Colella Farm Road before moving to Lowell. Brian served with pride in our Armed Forces in defense of freedom for his country.

His sacrifice leaves us with a debt that cannot be repaid. As we go on with our everyday lives, we are continually reminded of the sacrifices young men and women make on our behalf. Our condolences go out to Brian’s grieving family as they too have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Also killed with Brian were Spc. Joseph M. Hernandez of Hammond, IN, and Spc. Jason R. Parsons of Lenoir, NC. Our community has lost a true patriot and will pull together in his memory. In honor of Major Brian Mescall the flags have been lowered to half-staff across Hopkinton.

January 13, 2009 — In a battle over the skies of Hopkinton on this dreary day, the black bird above, perhaps a crow or raven, buzzes the hawk, who takes evasive action, likely after being caught looking for a snack made from the other bird's young. The drama took place nearly the entire length of the Downtown.
