After 10 business hours of polling, the results remain about the same as they started, with a 2-1 majority in favor of decriminalizing the currently illegal weed, which has the drug THC as the active drug ingredient.
Decriminalization of marijuana would likely mean that people would still not be able to transfer it to one another. In other words, distribution and cultivating would still be illegal. To allow it to be sold over the counter, or grown in a family garden, would take legalization.

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 — In spite of all of the dire predictions over the years, people bought their SUVs, heated pools, and kept their homes and offices heated at a more than comfortable level. But according to our latest poll, a large majority of people are feeling — and/or anticipating — the pinch from the recent higher energy costs, and are changing spending habits accordingly. In fact the rise in prices could be called a surge. What are some of the things people can do in the short term to fend off the energy monster? Well, a few people have offered suggestions on the discussion page, Town Talk, in the thread, "Reworking my personal budget." And in the long term, solar power, and specifically photo-voltaic, has had a recent resurgence of interest among locals, and makes sense to a lot of people. Photo-voltaic uses cells to convert sunlight to electricity. Are tax credits for homeowners available for its installation? Would the investment pay off without tax credits? Are there different types of solar power, and is one better than the other? More durable than the other? Are there other forms of energy that have the potential to pay for themselves in savings? In the olden days of the last gas/fuel crunch, solar-thermal was the way to go. Water would be pumped to the roof and be heated by the sun. It would then be pumped to the basement, and the heat would be transferred to the home's hot water tank via a heat exchanger, being sure that the water from the roof never touched the domestic water in the pipes. HopNews broached the subject two years ago.
Here is a HopNews.tv story reprinted from 2006: FREE Electricity
October 31, 2006 — Matt Arner and wife Mini Singh claim to be the first documented home in Hopkinton to have installed photovoltaic solar panels on their roof to cut down on their electricity costs. Unlike solar panels that carry sun-heated water to a storage unit in the basement for transfer to domestic hot water or heat, these actually convert sunlight into electricity that is used in the home when needed, according to Mr. Arner, that will provide 30% of their electricity and pay for itself in 5 years. When the production of electricity from the roof units is greater than the demand, it will return electricity through the meter and run it backwards. Mr. Arner says that much of his costs of the installation are mitigated by rebates — for instance with the Mass Technology Collaborative — and tax credits issued by the state and federal governments, as well as credits he can sell that are purchased by residents wanting "green" electricity.

MCGILLIVRAY RETURNS TO FENWAY PARK AFTER 30 YEARS OF RUNNING Boston Marathon Race Director celebrates 30 years of giving
At age 23, McGillivray, now BAA Boston Marathon Race Director and President of DMSE Sports www.dmsesports.com Inc., began his cross country run in Medford Oregon and finished his final leg of his ‘78 run, just one week after his 24th birthday at Fenway Park. McGillivray ran several laps around the warning track in front of the sold out 32,000 crowd. He will commemorate the occasion by also running a lap inside Fenway on August 14th and be met at home plate by family and friends. During the day, prior to the on-field ceremony, McGillivray will spend the day celebrating another milestone, his 54th birthday during which he will run 54 miles. It’s an annual tradition which he has done every year since his 12th birthday on which he ran those first 12 miles.
“To be honored by
the Jimmy Fund means a great deal to me,” says McGillivray. “The Jimmy
Fund, and the late Ken Coleman, gave me a chance to accomplish something
that even I didn’t know was possible until I actually took those final
steps inside Fenway Park. To run across the country was my dream, and to
couple that with raising awareness and money that might save the life of
a child was a tremendous responsibility which I did not take lightly.”
A partial list of some of McGillivray’s Jimmy Fund related accomplishments in the past 30 years include:
1978: Run Across America (3,452 miles) 1980: Run up East Coast (1,520 miles) 1981: New England Run (1,522 miles) 1982: Martha’s Vineyard Swim (7 miles) 1983: 24-hour Swim (26.2 miles) 1986: 24-hour bike ride (385 miles)
McGillivray’s inspirational story The Last Pick, co-authored by Linda Glass Fechter, intimately recounts the mental and physical obstacles McGillivray faced along life’s road which led him to his 1978 run. His story has inspired countless people to reach their own goals. All proceeds to go directly to his foundation.
To learn more about the anniversary of this 3,452 mile run across the country and how you can donate to Dave’s 30th anniversary fundraising effort on behalf of the Jimmy Fund, please visit www.dmsesports.com . |

• Provide proof of identification;

Legion Ball Update
Kelly Cook (7) of Hopkinton is introduced before Saturday night's game in Milford at Fino Field opening their Legion Sectional playoff Tournament game against East Longmeadow. Greeting Kelly, also from Hopkinton, are #2 Dan Muscatello, Catcher Matt Collins, #12 Mike Preite, and #16 Mark Sanborn. Also pictured are #3 Pete Farelli of Milford (2B), #9 Bryant Johnson of Milford (RF,P), and #21 Matt White of Bellingham (P). Not pictured from Hopkinton is Bryant Guilmette (P). The Milford Legion Post 59 baseball team defeated East Springfield at Milford's Fino field on Saturday nite by a score of 5-0 behind Matt White's outstanding pitching and a strong Milford defense keyed by Hopkinton players Dan Muscatello at short, Mark Sanborn at first base, Mike Preite at third base, Kelly Cook in centerfield and catcher Matt Collins.
On Sunday, Milford swept the best of three series by a score of 3-2 at East Springfield behind a great seven inning performance from starting pitcher Bryant Guilmette, also from Hopkinton. Bryant kept the East Springfield team off balance all afternoon with a sharp fastball and good movement on his off speed pitches. The game and series ended just 10 minutes before a thunderstorm with heavy rain hit the field in Springfield. By then, the team was on their bus and moving back towards the Pike and their next opponent!
Milford moves on to a series starting at Tivnan Field in Worcester on Tuesday night against the Worcester team, East Side. The winner of that series will advance to the State tournament in Chicopee starting on August 5th. Contributed content.

Infrastructure and Environmental Improvements on Tap for Hopkinton Schools School Committee passes solar project 4-1
File photo, above. by
Jessica Aker
The new bleachers will be placed at center field, and will be accessible by a lift as well as through the track surrounding the field. Originally, the plan called for around 900 seats. The plan does not cover the relocation or renovation of the scoreboard or the press box. The additions will be funded by the Hopkinton Athletic Association and Boston Athletic Association. Both organizations have committed to hundreds of thousands of dollars for the project. In addition, The Soil Exploration Corporation will conduct soil testing in the area. Since the construction of the bleachers will continue into the fall, Vice-Chair Phil Totino commented, "The view of the field will beimpacted. The new bleachers will be in a place people normally stand in to watch the games."
The Borrego Solar Project was also an item that required a vote of approval from the School Committee. |

The Hopkinton 10 year old Tondorf team completed their summer season by winning the Tondorf Championship in Medway
After finishing the regular season 9-0-1 and earning them number one seed in the playoffs, the Hillers faced off against Franklin in the first round on a sunny summer afternoon. Equipped with their trademark eye black, the Hillers shut out Franklin 9-0 behind outstanding pitching by Jake Doherty and Geoff Holler.
Next up for the Hopkinton in the semi-finals was a tough Bellingham team. The Hillers got up early with hits by Jack Vaccari and Cal Holland. The early lead was enough as Drew Simi and Matt Decina combined on the mound to hold the lead in route to a 6-3 Hopkinton win.
Medway would not go quietly and game two turned out to be an epic 11 inning thriller. Medway took an early 2-0 lead, but the Hillers fought back to go ahead in the top of the 2nd 3-2. Medway squeezed a run over in the bottom of the 3rd to tie the game at 3. Both teams battled valiantly, making outstanding defensive plays. Catcher Petey Scholoski cut down no less than three Medway runners trying to steal while Matt Hand gutted out 7 2/3 innings of shutout pitching. It was not until the top of the 11th inning when Mike Messier hit a deep sacrifice fly scoring two runs to give Hopkinton the 5-3 win and the 2008 10yr old Tondorf Championship.
The Hillers were coached by Don Lehman and assisted by Rick Decina, Pete Schiloski, Tim Simi, and Ken Vaccari. Congratulations on a great season Hillers! |

Two Accidents at Once
July 24, 2008 — This Mitsubishi sedan struck the pole in the left, rear background with its right front, after heading eastbound, from the opposite side of the pole and embedded the right front tire in the pole. It appears the car ended up with the side facing the direction it came from, blocking the lane. After hearing the sound of the crash, a father and son who live in the house across the street called 911, got dressed, and ran out with flashlight in hand, but not in time to stop an oncoming GMC pickup, which hit the car, apparently broadside, on the passenger side while the stranded driver was still in it. One woman at the scene said that the female driver of the car, who was taken to Milford hospital by Hopkinton Ambulance, had a gash across the entire top of her head. She was arguing with firefighters to let her walk home. |

Candidate Dan Haley Accuses Legislature of Failing to Protect Children Opponents Reply
July 24, 2008 —
Dan Haley, Republican candidate to represent the Eighth Middlesex
District in the House of
Representatives, released the following statement: "As a father and a
citizen, I am outraged and disgusted. As a candidate for the House of
Representatives, I am more determined than ever to raise my voice
against the lack of political courage and judgment evidenced by our
Legislature's refusal to throw the book at child predators. The only way
to guarantee that a predator will not repeatedly victimize children is
to put that predator behind bars. "The law currently awaiting Governor Patrick's signature is a step in the right direction, but make no mistake: it is a half measure at best. Massachusetts must finish the job by joining the vast majority of states that have enacted true versions of 'Jessica's Law,' including mandatory minimum sentencing for child predators."
When asked to respond to Mr. Haley's position, Democratic candidate Carolyn Dykema said this: "My heart goes out to the family involved in this terrible crime. I have complete confidence that District Attorney Leone and his capable team will ensure that justice is served."
Democratic candidate Ed Mills had this to say: "The Ed Mills for State Representative Campaign chooses not to respond to this difficult situation at this time. This is not a situation from which one should attempt to make political gain. We leave it in the capable hands of the Middlesex District Attorney's Office and the Holliston Police Department. We keep the family in our thoughts and we wish the best for them." |

WOW! Over 2 million served! When I started this HopNews.com, it began as a way to share my feature photography with more people. I needed a reason to go shoot, because as much as I enjoy photography, and as much as I know my level of work, it just doesn't do much good to have a pile of outstanding feature photos sitting in a cardboard box that someone gets to have or fight over when I pass to the next life (Which I hope is decades away).
In March of last year, the fourth year of HopNews, we awarded $500 to Hopkinton High School student, Greg Fraser, who guessed frighteningly close to the time when our Sitemeter, above, would reach one million visits . And now, a little more than a year later, the visits to HopNews have doubled. (It should be noted that Sitemeter only tracks about 80% of the actual visits, due to being cookie-based. But the number is stunning nonetheless.).
Thanks to the thousands of regular readers, as well as the thousands of visitors from around the world. And special thanks to our advertisers, who support the efforts to make this site the best it can be. And now, let's look for great things in the future. You ideas are appreciated. ~Robert |

I was inspired by a friend today to put a blog together. So I did! It is an hour old, so please understand it may need some tweaking, some redesign, or added content or features. Anyone can post a comment at this time, but I would encourage people to register with Google right away so that if the time comes that we need to make it a registered-only site, the serious and well-mannered people will not lose out. I believe you can make your email not show up in your posts, but it might be fun if you have a photo icon to represent you on the blog, if that is possible. There is a poll there now, so please vote at least. ~Robert |

SUNDAY TAPS VIGIL, AUGUST 3, 2008
Hopkinton to join thousands of communities across America Please join the Hopkinton Veteran’s Celebration Committee on Sunday, August 3, 2008 as we join thousands of communities across America for a remembrance ceremony at Mt. Auburn Cemetery/GAR Memorial in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. The Committee is hosting a “Sunday Taps Vigil” starting at 7:00 p.m. The ceremony will consist of a short tribute to American soldiers, veterans and their families and is expected to last 15 minutes. The ceremony will include the sounding of the 24 hauntingly beautiful notes of “Taps”.
“Taps” traditionally serves two important purposes. At military outposts around the world it is played in the evening to signal the time for quiet, rest and reflection after a day of duty. It is also mandated by the Department of Defense to be sounded live by a bugler, if possible, at the funeral of each and every American veteran as a final tribute to that individual veteran’s honorable time of service to his or her country. An average of over 1,600 American veterans are laid to rest each day.
Hopkinton has held this ceremony, on the first Sunday of each month, since it was initiated in March 2004 by the national non-profit organization Bugles Across America. Since the ceremony was first proposed, over 1,500 communities across America, as well as in Canada and several other countries, now participate. ~ Hopkinton Veterans' Celebration Committee |

Weather was the Story On Wednesday Evening
July 23, 2008 — A fierce lightning storm Wednesday evening that subsided before midnight, but had the weatherman cautioning severe weather until 5:00 am Thursday, had emergency services scurrying all over Hopkinton for a solid hour. Above is the sky over the Wilson Street LNG facility, where apparently millions of gallons of Liquefied Natural Gas are stored in 3 large powder-blue storage tanks, the adjacent street is a no-park, no-stop, no-stand zone, and police refer to their frequent patrols of the secure area in code. At least one driver driving on East Main Street (The perspective from the camera, above) called in a "large fire" at the facility Wednesday evening. The facility did report to police that it "shut down" due to the storm. The bright spot in the photo is the flame from a discharge valve that releases gas into the atmosphere and burns it as it does. It has two such devices that can often be seen by patrons of the Hopkinton State Park, who call regularly report the controlled burn. Fire and Police departments were kept busy as a report for fire coming out of an outlet of one West Main Street home, and a report of an alarm at a nearby explosives storage facility. But that wasn't all. One home on North Street reported a teen being struck by lightning through a computer. Another person also reported being struck. Alarms at the Post Office went off due to the storm, after power was momentarily lost downtown. A pine tree was struck yesterday at the State Park, causing a split of the bark from nearly the entire length of the 70 foot tall tree, and burning most of the needles above the strike. A house on Ash Street was struck Wednesday evening, and smelled of smoke, below. |

Not Again!
July 23, 2008 — Hopkinton Firefighters responded with two engines to a home on Ash Street that was reportedly struck by lightning. One public safety official on the scene said the house burned in the past, but did not say if it was from lightning. |

Fire on Westcott Drive
July 23, 2008 — "A small fire in the basement" was how the first responders described the situation as they asked for water to be brought in quickly. They knocked the fire down in just a few minutes, but stayed until joists were checked all of the way to the attic. One firefighters requested the thermal imaging camera, that can display differences in temperature on a display monitor. A wall with a fire behind it would be a different tone the the surrounding wall. |
