Hopkinton CFO Seeks Money Donors Pan Mass Challenge Participant
June 30, 2008 Hopkinton's Chief Financial Officer Heidi Kriger has made a commitment to ride yet again, for the ninth time, in the Pan Mass Challenge, a 170 mile bike ride to benefit the Dana Farber Institute and the Jimmy Fund. What had started as an endeavor to ride with a friend who had lost a loved one to cancer, turned into a personal fight when she was diagnosed herself with breast cancer in 2006, and ironically, with a bit of good Karma, benefited from the efforts she had made to help others At that time she said, "Luckily, due to an early diagnosis, and the treatments that are available as a result of fundraising efforts of charities like the Pan Mass Challenge and the research that they fund I received treatments that were not available perhaps ten years ago." According to a PMC fact sheet, "The 29th annual PMC will be held on August 1, 2 and 3, 2008. It will begin on Friday, Aug. 1, with an opening ceremony that will be televised live on NECN. The ride has two starting lines on Saturday, Aug. 2, in Sturbridge and in Wellesley, and four finish lines: one-day riders finished in Bourne on Saturday, Aug. 2 or in Wellesley on Sunday, Aug. 3, and two-day riders finished on Sunday, Aug. 3, in either Wellesley or Provincetown." To help sponsor Heidi Kriger, please visit her webpage on the PMC website. |

It is alleged that Annis gambled

Attorney Leone said. I want to thank

Ultimately, Annis built a debt
of $5000, which was the maximum debt he was allowed to incur by the
bookmaker. In September 2007, the bookmaker arranged to meet Annis so
that he could collect the money owed. During that exchange, it is
alleged that Annis showed the bookmaker his badge and indicated that he
may be investigating gambling cases. Annis is alleged to have indicated to the
bookmaker that wouldn't be arrested and that "things could go smoothly
for him." Annis then never paid the bookmaker his debt and warned him
not to blow his cover. Annis is also alleged to have shown the

During the investigation, Annis gave admissions that he was not doing an official investigation into gaming crimes.

The Hopkinton Board of Health tests have shown positive for E. coli, and the State Park for Enterococci bacteria. Two of the steps people can take are to use clean diapers and keep pet waste from the water. The water at each location is tested weekly by law, and more regularly upon the discovery of the microorganisms. |

Life in Prison Without the Possibility of Parole To be served concurrently
June 26, 2008 British subject Neil Entwistle was found guilty yesterday of murdering his wife Rachel and 9 month-old baby Lillian Rose with a pistol in their rented Hopkinton home in January, 2006. He was sentenced today by Justice Diane M. Kottmyer to two concurrent life sentences and ten years probation, with a warning from the judge that he may not profit from the sale of his story. A note was found on him during his arrest in London that mentioned that he had an interest in writing a book about the murders. During victim impact statements, Rachel's mother, Priscilla Matterazzo said, "Our dreams as a parent and grandparent have been shattered by the shameful, selfish act of one person, Neil Entwistle. For him to have tried to hide behind an accusation of murder-suicide of this beautiful woman, a perfect mother, is low and despicable." She said that she, her husband and the friends were sentenced without the luxury of a trial by jury. She spoke of losing two generations of her family. Stepfather Joseph Matterazzo also spoke of eternal judgment; and her brother, Jerome Souza gave a very emotional statement. Mr. Souza spoke of the responsibility as a brother that he learned early in life when he did not see his sister on the correct school bus and took action to find her. He projected how younger cousins will see their photos with their grandparents change each year, while the one with Rachel's will not. Judge Kottmyer explained that while she understood the prosecution's request for consecutive life sentences, which are used in situations where there is a possibility of parole, the sentence of concurrent life terms affords no possibility of parole, making the consecutive terms unnecessary. He will begin serving his sentence at MCI Cedar Junction in Walpole, but it is unknown if his entire sentence will be served there. Photo is a grab-shot from pool video from Tru-Tv. |

Reader from Scotland Believes Entwistle Got Fair Trial Editor, HopNews:
Like many people in Britain I have been following the Entwistle murder case with great interest and I just want to say that I am quite certain that the vast majority of people in the UK believe that Neil Entwistle received a fair trial and that the jury reached the correct verdict. Had he been tried over here I am sure the self same verdict would have been reached (particularly as we have majority verdicts here, with no need for unanimity) . I felt embarrassed to listen to his parents besmirching the memory of the poor victim although I understand how difficult it must be for them to accept his crime but, even so, the claim of not receiving a fair trial is insulting to the good people of your town. Entwistle had legal representation, he offered no witnesses in his defence, no forensic or ballistic evidence to support the suicide claims and, in the end, he refused to get in the witness box and explain his actions. The question of a fair trial really doesn't even come into it. |

Neil Entwistle Found Guilty
June 25, 2008 Neil Entwistle's defense team, Stephanie Page and Eliot Weinstein stepped up to the dozens of awaiting cameras to call the jury's decision wrong, and to vow appeals in the case. Entwistle was found guilty today of two counts of murder, one count of illegal possession of a firearm, and one count of illegal possession of ammunition for shooting his wife Rachel and nine-month old baby Lillian in their rented Hopkinton home in January, 2006, after having moved in only a few days before. Prosecutor Michael Fabbri built a case against Entwistle that included witnesses, a mountain of forensic evidence, paper trails, and Entwistle's own words, spoken to Sgt. Robert Manning, then Trooper Manning, who recorded a solid two hours conversation at the Hopkinton Police Headquarters that was very damaging to Entwistle's defense. On the audio recording, Entwistle claims that he saw the bullet hole in his baby's body after returning from shopping, a shopping that it turned out he never did. But a forensic investigator said even she didn't know it was a knife wound. When asked by the Trooper how he knew it was a bullet wound. Entwistle replied that it was obvious, and that he saw burn marks. He spoke of seeing bubbles on his baby's mouth, and how painful it was to see it. In his closing statement, Mr. Fabbri stated that Entwistle saw the bubbles immediately following the death. Entwistle claims he did not touch the bodies to see if they were warm or if they were alive. He said he covered them to "close it off." (Photo of District Attorney Gerry Leone, left, and Entwistle prosecutor Michael Fabbri at a previously scheduled reception for Mr. Leone in Framingham this evening, a few hours after the successful prosecution of Neil Entwistle.) Mr. Fabbri said that Entwistle placed a pillow over his Lillian Rose after shooting her because he could not stand the screaming coming from her. He said he went to Carver, his in-laws home, to get a gun to kill himself, but he didn't have the key, so he left for England. One commentator noted that Entwistle was going to commit grand larceny, splatter his brains all over the Matterazzo's home, but didn't want to break a window pane to get in. One of the most notable moments in the trial was when Rachel's stepfather Joseph Matterazzo said that Entwistle wanted the mother and child buried together. "'Because that's the way I left them I mean that's the way I found them,'" he quoted Entwistle as saying. Entwistle's defense attorney Stephanie Page aggressively cross examined the Medical Examiner, who she blamed for not considering suicide as a cause of death, which was the defense's scenario, presented by Attorney Eliot Weinstein in his closing statement. Attorney Weinstein demonstrated with his hands how be believed Rachel killed herself with a long-barreled hand gun after killing her baby and having the bullet that went through her baby lodged in her breast. The jury did not accept that scenario, but instead found Entwistle guilty on all charges. He will be sentenced at 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning to a minimum of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Eliot Weinstein addresses media, as do others, below. Entwistle's mom accuses Rachel of murder.
June 25, 2008 The HopNews camera caught up with Middlesex District Attorney, Gerry Leone, who had a few words to say in the evening after the jury in the Neil Entwistle case found him guilty of two counts of First Degree Murder, as well as the other charges. |
