Annual Rummage Sale

Senior Center, 28 Mayhew St

Thursday and Friday,

May 15 & 16, from 9 to 7 and Saturday from 9 to noon

The Center's Annual Rummage Sale will take place at the Senior Center, 28 Mayhew St., on Thursday and Friday, May 15 & 16, from 9 to 7 and Saturday from 9 to noon.

This is the Senior Center’s largest fundraiser to benefit the transportation and nutrition programs that are not funded in the town budget. It is because of the public support for events like this that the Senior Center is able to provide a top notch program at a reasonable cost to taxpayers.

Lunch will be served on Thursday (hot dogs and beans) and Friday (hot turkey sandwiches). The cost is $4.00, which includes drink and dessert. If you want to eat at the first seating, please make reservations. Walk-ins are welcome from 12-1.

The Thrift Shop will also be open, offering quality antiques as well as gift items, and the greenhouse crew will be selling their own plants, including 13 kinds of well-started tomato plants.

A Thank You From the Police Association

All the members of the Hopkinton Police Association would like to thank everyone who participated in one way or another and helped to make the annual fishing derby such a great success.  We especially thank all of the donors who made it possible for us to stock the pond, and to purchaser T-shirts and prizes.

We also had donors who provided the hamburgers, hotdogs, rolls, drinks, cheese for the hamburgers, chips, water, condiments and the list goes on and on.  The Association made a small profit when everything was tallied up which will go towards to cost of the Senior dinner planned for later this year.

Again, we thank you all and we acknowledge that the success of this event would not have been possible without so many people who helped us and most importantly all the parents who registered their children and all the children who came to “catch the big one”.  See you next year !

Felony Larceny of Signs

Police investigating

Above, at supporter Michael Kennedy's home, some of the signs retrieved and ready to be put back where they were stolen from, something that will take hours. Mr. Kennedy needs to visit every location to see whether or not that location was hit.

May 12, 2008 — This morning, residents of North Street awoke to find 70 of candidate Selectman Chair Muriel Kramer's political signs across the road, having been stolen from the properties where they were displayed.

"We are going to look into it like any other larceny," said Hopkinton Police Sgt. Charles Wallace. "We can't say what methods we are going to use, but emails are going out to all of the officers to be on the lookout," he said.

"A couple of years ago, there were political signs were stolen, and we caught the people who did it.

"It is a larceny and people could be charged with a criminal offense. Larceny over $250 is a felony," Sgt. Wallace said.

According to Mrs. Kramer, the signs cost $4 each. ($4x70=$280)
People with information about the crime may call the police at 508-497-3401.

Double Fatality in West Boylston Single-Car Crash

Neither driver nor passenger wearing seat belt

May 12, 2008 — Today, the State Police confirmed the two victims of Sunday’s fatal crash on Route 190 North in West Boylston were positively identified. The operator of the vehicle was 39-year-old Todd Marsh of Princeton, MA, and the passenger was 40-year-old Michelle Marsh of Princeton, MA.

The investigation indicates the Dodge Viper was following a second vehicle on Route 190 North at the time of the crash. Although the description of the second vehicle is not being released at this time, the operator of that vehicle may be able to provide details that will further this investigation. Anyone with information about the identity of that operator is asked to contact the State Police Barracks in Holden at 508-829-4431

On Sunday May 11, 2008 at approximately 9:41 PM, Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Holden responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash on Route 190 North in West Boylston that resulted in two fatalities.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Hari Arisetty indicates that a 2003 Dodge Viper being operated by 39-year-old Todd Marsh of Princeton, MA, was traveling north on Route 190 in West Boylston, approximately one mile prior to Exit 5, when it lost control, struck the jersey barrier on the left side of the roadway, veered across the travel lanes, struck the guardrail on the right side of the roadway and came to rest wedged underneath the guardrail.  Todd Marsh sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.  A passenger, 40-year-old Michelle Marsh of Princeton, MA, also sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.  Neither was wearing a seat belt.

Although speed appears to have been a factor, this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.  The West Boylston Police and Fire Departments and MassHighway assisted Troopers at the scene.

Due to the investigation, the right lane of Route 190 North was closed for approximately four hours.

No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly.

It is an honor for my family and I to assist the MBCC in this very small way to make their event a success.”

Against The Tide is a fundraising event which raises money for Breast Cancer prevention research and education through the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) and its sister research organization, Silent Spring Institute.

Breast cancer now strikes more women in the world than any other type of cancer. In the past 50 years, the lifetime risk of breast cancer has nearly tripled in the United States. In the 1940’s, a woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer was 1 in 22. In the year 2002, the risk was 1 in 8 and is presently 1 in 7. The increasing prevalence reinforces the necessity to reverse the trend and prevent breast cancer from occurring in the first place.
The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is a nonprofit organization committed to stopping the breast cancer epidemic in Massachusetts through activism, advocacy, research and education. Founded in 1991, the focus of MBCC is to find the causes of breast cancer and seek real prevention against this devastating disease.

Eagle Scouts Build Leadership Projects

May 9, 2008 — Matt Dry and Nick Dittman, Hopkinton High School students and boy scouts in Troop 4, are working on their Eagle Scout service projects. Less than 4 percent of all Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout by age 18. Completion of a leadership service project is an Eagle Scout requirement, and the project has to benefit the community. The scouts can use their troop to complete the projects, but the Eagle Scout is supposed to assume leadership and supervise the work. Eagle Scouts must earn at least 21 merit badges, including 12 required badges in subjects such as first aid, citizenship and personal fitness, but the cornerstone is the community service project.

Matt and Nick are both working on projects at 61 Wood Street, home to both St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Grace United Methodist Church. Dave Dry, Matt’s father, provided the inspiration for both projects.

Matt is creating a meditation/memorial garden. The final project will depend on the success of fundraising efforts, but Matt hopes to include memorial bricks, stone pavers, a rock border, an olive wood cross, and a garden area. Nick is replacing the entry way of the church with a stone walkway bordered with memorial bricks. This work is already underway and looks terrific. Final touches will be made in the next several weeks. Materials for both projects will be paid for by their brick fundraiser.

Both scouts are selling laser-engraved 4x8 bricks for their service projects for $50.00 each. Four lines of text with up to 21 characters each are available on each brick to memorialize or honor a loved one. The deadline for ordering bricks is June 1, 2008. To order a laser-engraved brick for the meditation/memorial garden, please contact Matt Dry at hillerpride@comcast.net  or call 508-544-1645. To order a laser-engraved brick to line the walkway, please contact Nick Dittman at ndittman@gmail.com  or call 508-435-2494.

Legacy Farms Well Water ENF Filing Withdrawn

May 8, 2007 — According to Steven Zieff, Project Manager for Legacy Farms the Town of Hopkinton DPW Board and Legacy Farms LLC jointly elected to withdraw the Alprilla Farms Well Water ENF (Environmental Notification Form) filing yesterday. The decision on the filing was due tomorrow.

The DEP-Approved pump test must be conducted during drier months, after which the ENF will be resubmitted.

"By resubmitting the ENF with the Pump Test results, a number of issues which were identified in the filing, will be definitive," Mr. Zieff said in an email.

"This will enable a more expedited MEPA process for the benefit of the Alprilla Farms’ Well filing," he added.

The permit seeks to withdraw 432,000 gallons from the 40 acre, town-owned property, but needs approval from the MEPA.
