Flame Transferred to Permanent Home

April 22, 2008 — Spyros Zagaris, Mayor of Marathon, Greece transfers the Flame of the Marathon Run, which was lit last November for the first time at the tomb of the warriors in Marathon, Greece, to a permanent Hopkinton home in front of Police Headquarters, where video feeds surround the building.

Tim Kilduff expands role

April 22, 2008 — At an emotional ceremony today at the Police Headquarters, President of the HAA (Hopkinton athletic Association) Timothy Kilduff, pushing back tears, accepted a laurel wreath from Spyridon Zagaris, the Mayor of Marathon Greece as appreciation for his work in bringing a Sister City relationship between his town and Hopkinton.

"Tim Kilduff was present at the initial start of the flame in Marathon, Greece on November 3, 2007," said Mayor Zagaris, speaking through Dimitri Kyriakides.

"He believes in the same ideals we do in Marathon.

"We believe Tim Kilduff is the right man to represent Marathon (Greece) in the United States, and he will be contacting all of the major cities of the country," he said.

"We believe and hope Marathon will be the center of peace and hope. Hopkinton will join us in bringing peace, love and brotherhood throughout the world."

April 21, 2008 — If you use email, friends have probably forwarded you chain letters about easy moneymaking opportunities, compassionate concerns, dangers to your health or to your computer's, or even dramatic implications of scientifically credible reports.

We read, for instance, that on the night of December 22, 1999, when the full moon, the lunar perigee and the winter solstice coincided for the first time in 133 years, the moon would appear 14% larger given its proximity to the earth, and sunlight striking the moon would be 7% stronger than in summer.

How many of us believed the benign hoax--- part fact, part hyperbole-- that we could drive without headlights and turn off distracting Christmas decorations that celebrate Thomas Edison more than the Christ Child?

Since then, how many of us forwarded a message to test a Microsoft/AOL email tracking system, the only requirement for receiving cash rewards from Bill Gates?

Or threw out the artificial sweetener aspartame because allegedly it has been proved responsible for an epidemic of cancer, brain tumors, and multiple sclerosis?

Did you refuse to open an emailed postcard from a family member, having been warned that it camouflaged a deadly computer virus?

Did you respond to an appeal on behalf of a seven-year-old, dying from lung cancer caused by secondhand smoke, by forwarding her poem, "Slow Dance," (actually written by an adult child psychologist) so that the American Cancer Society would donate three cents per name to her treatment and recovery plan?

Did you check the ACS website to see if it would really contribute money?

April 20, 2008 — The Hopkinton Marathon Committee honored the five veterans above, representing three wars, World War II, Korea , and Vietnam at the VIP area today. Pat Lynch, left, will fire the gun for the second wave in memory of his late wife, Rosemary, who was a member Emeritus and a founding member of the Hopkinton Marathon Committee.

Massachusetts Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) to lend a hand at this year’s Boston Marathon

This year’s Boston Marathon will have some new faces at the finish line. The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) will provide the race organization (Boston Athletic Association) with an additional team of trained medical and support personnel to assist in providing comprehensive medical coverage for the race.

The MRC volunteer group for the Boston Marathon is drawn from throughout Massachusetts. It is comprised of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, mental health specialists and administrative personnel.

The MRC is sponsored by the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General and is a partner with Citizen Corps in bringing together local health care personnel with citizen volunteers to create community-based units. MRC units are trained and prepared to respond as a team to emergencies in their communities. They may also be deployed to other areas. The members also provide education, outreach, and various health services to their community throughout the year.

This year the MRC will be providing medical and administrative support at the finish area on race day in conjunction with other local, state and federal agencies.   The MRC benefits in several ways from this arrangement:

*       The B.A.A. will allow the MRC to further its mission to provide public service to its constituent communities;
*       The MRC is able to train with other emergency service agencies providing quality care of individuals;
*       Large scale medical exercises, such as the Marathon, provide an excellent opportunity for the MRC to practice a cooperative response in the event of a true emergency;
*       Use of state of the art devices and equipment enable the MRC volunteers to gain an understanding of how these devices will function during crises; and,
*       MRC volunteers will gain specialized medical knowledge as they participate in medical education seminars and specific training for triage of runners.

According to Medical Reserve Corps literature, the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) system was founded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shortly after September 11, 2001. MRC’s operate in cities and towns in conjunction with the Board of Health. Scouts Tea with Greek Marathoners

April 20, 2008 — Hopkinton Girl Scouts had a Tea Reception with Greek Marathoners and luminaries on Friday at Weston Nurseries. Scouts attending were from troops 3789, 3806, 2248, 2245, and 2219. There were 30 scouts attending the event. Scouts ranged in level from Daisy to Senior.

Elmwood Runs Remarkable Relay

April 20, 2008 — Last Thursday, the lite Kenyans' visit that had been scheduled at Elmwood School for the 16th Annual Adopt-A-Marathoner program was canceled due to an outbreak of chicken-pox that could have been risky for the visiting athletes.

Nonetheless, two teachers at the Elmwood School, Ms. Emily LeRoy and Ms. Bridget Donahue, tempered the loss with a race of their own.

Above is a composite of pictures from Room 13's and Room 17's Remarkable Relay Race. The children were put together in teams of 4 and raced around the big field in front of the school. The winning teams from each heat ran in the championship race. Our championship team received medals for their big win. ~Emily LeRoy

April 19, 2008 — Chair of the Board of Selectmen Muriel Kramer, and Mayor of Marathon, Greece Spiros Zagaris, transfer the sacred flame of the Marathon Run to a cauldron in front of the Hopkinton Gazebo in a ceremony held at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon.

April 19, 2008 — Hopkinton Selectman Brian Herr, who has a couple of dozen Marathon runs behind him, and Greek Marathon Champion, Maria Polyzou, jointly carry the Flame of the Marathon run across the Start line today at 2:00 p.m. along with Marathon runners from Greece.

Another Banner Year for Respite Center

April 19, 2008 — Above, mother of Katie Rose Chaves, center, is off camera taking a shot at the Congregational Church on Saturday during the Respite Center's annual party, which was held there due to construction at the house on Main Street. On her left is Brooke Taylor, and the right is Katya Wheelwright. This year, the Firefighters along the route of the Marathon, led by the Natick Department, collected a total of $81,000 for the Center. EMC, which matches employee contributions for the first $75,000, put up $130,000 toward the cause of running the loving and caring environment of the Michael Carter Lisnow Respite Center.
