SUMMARY:Virtual - Psychological Thrillers and the Queen of Twists – An Author Talk with Freida McFadden
DESCRIPTION:Get your popcorn and take a seat as we pick the brain of the queen of twists herself\, Freida McFadden! McFadden will join us to chat about writing psychological thrillers\, her mega-bestselling hit The Housemaid series\, in particular her forthcoming (June 11\, 2024) third installment\, The Housemaid Is Watching. \nREGISTER HERE \nThe next installment is full of unbelievable twists and tension as it continues to follow Millie Calloway. She used to clean other people’s houses—now\, she can’t believe this new home is actually hers. The charming kitchen\, the quiet cul-de-sac\, the huge yard where her kids can play. She and her husband saved for years to give their children the life they deserve. \nEven though she’s wary of their new neighbor\, Mrs. Lowell when she invites them over for dinner\, it’s their chance to make friends\, so they accept the invitation. Mrs. Lowell’s maid opens the door wearing a white apron\, her hair in a tight bun. Millie knows exactly what it’s like to be in her shoes. But the maid’s cold stare gives her chills… \nThe Lowells’ maid isn’t the only strange thing on their street. Millie’s sure she sees a shadowy figure watching them. Her husband leaves the house late at night. And when she meets a woman who lives across the way\, her words chill to the bone: Be careful of your neighbors. \nMillie wonders: Did they make a terrible mistake moving their family here?

SUMMARY:Rethinking the Concepts of Woman\, Life\, Freedom: Iran and the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Frieda Afary is an Iranian American public librarian based in Los Angeles\, a translator\, and author of Socialist Feminism: A New Approach (Pluto Press\, 2022). \n“Woman\, Life\, Freedom” became the slogan of the woman-led uprising that started in Iran in September 2022 after the state police beating and murder of a young Kurdish woman for not wearing her hijab “correctly.” This slogan raises important questions not only for Iran but also for those in the United States and around the world who are concerned about women’s rights and human rights. \nThis presentation will discuss the ways in which many Iranians are thinking about the concepts of woman\, life and freedom today. It will also explore some ways in which these concepts have been addressed by contemporary feminist thinkers and eighteenth\, nineteenth and twentieth century philosophers. Comparing and contrasting these views can help shed light on key issues in today’s debates on gender\, reproductive rights\, individual rights and social responsibility.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL - A Literary Examination of Power\, Love\, and Art with Xochitl Gonzalez
DESCRIPTION:We cannot wait for you to join us as we chat with award-winning and bestselling author Xochitl Gonzalez about her newest novel Anita de Monte Laughs Last. \nAbout the novel: \nAnita de Monte Laughs Last is a propulsive\, witty examination of power\, love\, and art\, daring to ask who gets to be remembered and who is left behind in the rarefied world of the elite. In 1985. Anita de Monte\, a rising star in the art world\, is found dead in New York City; her tragic death is the talk of the town. Until it isn’t. By 1998 Anita’s name had been all but forgotten―certainly by the time Raquel\, a third-year art history student was preparing her final thesis. On College Hill\, surrounded by privileged students whose futures are already paved out for them\, Raquel feels like an outsider. Students of color\, like her\, are the minority there\, and the pressure to work twice as hard for the same opportunities is no secret. But when Raquel becomes romantically involved with a well-connected older art student\, she finds herself unexpectedly rising up the social ranks. As she attempts to straddle both worlds\, she stumbles upon Anita’s story\, raising questions about the dynamics of her own relationship\, which eerily mirrors that of the forgotten artist. \nMoving back and forth through time and told from the perspectives of both Anita and Raquel\, this is sure a novel (and a conversation) that you don’t want to miss! \nAbout the Author: \nXochitl Gonzalez is the New York Times bestselling author of Olga Dies Dreaming. Named a Best of 2022 by The New York Times\, TIME\, Kirkus\, Washington Post\, and NPR\, Olga Dies Dreaming was the winner of the Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize in Fiction and The New York City Book Awards. A Reese’s Book Club Pick\, her new novel\, Anita de Monte Laughs Last\, was published on March 2024 with Flatiron Books. As a staff writer for The Atlantic\, she was recognized as a 2023 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Commentary. A native Brooklynite and proud public school graduate\, Gonzalez holds a BA from Brown University and an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
