Hopkinton’s Junior Prom was last night, and the kids were out on the town looking their finest. By all accounts it was a smashing success; another rite of passage in the books.

Last year, the girl’s hockey team needed a goalie and one young lady graciously offered to volunteer. But she didn’t have any equipment. In short order she was kitted and the team went on to play.

Speaking of hockey, yesterday a 7-year old needed a stick. In minutes the situation was resolved.

In 2018, the tragic story of young Leah Davis rocked our town. A campaign was started to raise money for the Davis family, and within days seemingly every mailbox in town was adorned with a purple ribbon of support.

Orale opened a few weeks ago and business has been booming since. Swoon continues to thrive.

The annual fashion show to raise money for ovarian cancer research sells out within minutes. More than $200,000 has been collected to date, resulting in earlier detection and lives saved. Project Just Because is rarely in need of volunteers; the generosity in this town is remarkable.

A lost debit card was recovered at CVS. Through a Facebook post the owner was located quickly.

Out of towners needed a place to stay for the Marathon. Homes were opened to strangers, who left comments about how gracious and nice our town is.

Drive by the Common and you’ll see the Hopkinton Garden Club beautifying it. While out, drive by any field in town and note the gaggle of kids playing sport – learning, improving and having fun.

We’re all proud of our town’s graduating seniors. Preparing them for college is a herculean effort; the culmination of every book read, life lesson taught, schedule coordinated, and financial and emotional sacrifice made, all for the moment when our kids step out on their own.

Who makes all of this, and countless other moments happen? Hopkinton Moms. They are dedicated, industrious, generous and caring. They are quick to rally for a cause and extend a hand to someone in need. More importantly, they invest deeply in other people’s kids, not just their own. In ways small and large, they are the true difference maker.

This is unique to our town. A town too large and we’d feel disconnected. A town too small and the resources and time wouldn’t be there. Hopkinton is the perfect size to incubate this generosity of spirit.

To be sure, we have our differences. Political, religious and cultural forces will always be divisive, and they are amplified by mass media.

But when the chips are down, there is no one better to have by your side than a Hopkinton mom. Fiercely loyal, they will lift you up when it matters most.
