Fire in Westborough; elderly resident perishes

At 1:34 PM today, Westborough Fire and Police responded to a report of a fire at 60 Belknap Street. The daughter of the resident arrived at the house and was the first to call 911.

Crews arrived to find heavy fire coming out of the front and left side of the house, primarily from the living room. Indications were that one person was trapped inside. A Westborough police officer was first on the scene, and he tried to effect a rescue but the flames were too intense. The officer was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and another firefighter was taken with minor injuries. The victim, an elderly woman, was found deceased.

While on scene first responders encountered a secondary explosion from propane tanks near the front of the house. 

Crews extinguished the blaze in approximately 30 minutes. The investigation is ongoing in a joint operation between Westborough Fire, Westborough Police, State Police and the State Fire Marshall’s Service.
